Tournament Run Ends for Volleyball after Loss to Trinity in Regional Final, 3-1

The Emory University volleyball team finished their season in the Mount Berry regional final on Saturday afternoon after falling to the Trinity Tigers in four sets.

The Eagles saw an impressive season under first year head coach Brianna Jones and finish the season with a 26-3 record. The team had major wins over ranked teams including Berry and WashU and were ranked as high as No. 4 by the AVCA.

After defeating Meredith College and Covenant, the Eagles headed into the match with the Tigers with a spot in the Elite Eight on the line. Junior Lily Martin finished the day with 13 kills with fellow junior Alana Dawson posting 11 on the day. Junior Deborah Hong recorded another impressive day with 31 digs over four sets while junior Sarah Luong and sophomore Olivia Rabinowitz helped the team with 27 and 19 assists respectively.

The day started big for the Eagles taking a 5-0 lead in the first set thanks to kills from senior Carly Wallace and sophomore Eliane Silberman. By the first substitutions for the Eagles, Emory was able to hold a 10-4 lead over the Tigers. The middle of the set went back and forth with Trinity closing the gap bringing the score to 18-14. Emory was able to take advantage of attack errors from the Tigers' offense to take the first set 25-18.

The second set started closer with the Tigers holding a 6-4 lead by the first substitutions before the Eagles tied the set at six thanks to kills from Dawson and Martin. After a tie at 10, Trinity went on an 8-3 run to hold an 18-13 lead over Emory. The Eagles weren't able to answer and the Tigers took the second set 25-18.

Trinity took their momentum right into the third set holding an 8-2 lead at the first substitutions of the set. The Eagles later scored on kills from Wallace to bring the score to an 11-9 Tigers' advantage. Once again, Trinity was able to go on an 8-2 lead to hold a 22-13 advantage towards the end of the third set. Junior Jessica Majka entered the set late after Wallace sustained an injury and was able to record two kills for the Eagles, but the effort wasn't enough and the Tigers took the third set 25-17.

The fourth set was a nail biter for both teams with the Tigers needing a set win to advance to the Elite Eight.  The Tigers had a 4-2 lead before Emory was able to later tie the set at nine thanks to back to back kills from Martin. The scoring battle continued from both sides with the Eagles holding a slight 17-15 advantage highlighted by kills from Majka and junior Madison Cail. The set would then see six ties ending with a 23-23 score before the Tigers scored back to back points to take the set 25-23 and advance to the next round of the tournament.

After the match, Dawson and Hong were named to the Mount Berry Regional All-Tournament Team for their efforts this weekend. Dawson totaled 38 kills over the tournament while Hong posted 82 digs.
