Emory Cross Country Teams Compete at UAB Classic

The Emory cross country teams traveled to Meadowbrook, AL on Saturday, racing against primarily division I competition at the UAB Classic. The men, ranked 9th in the nation according to the U.S. Track & field and Cross Country Coaches Association Poll, placed sixth in the 8k race while the No. 14 ranked women placed eighth in the 6k.

The Eagles men’s team placed sixth in the field of 18 teams with a score of 151 and finished first among division III teams in attendance. Belmont distinguished themselves from the rest of the field with a score of 57 and were followed up by New Orleans (114 points) and Memphis (118 points). Emory’s five scoring runners had an impressive day, all finishing within 53 seconds of one another. Leading the pack for the Eagles was senior Brett Lucas who finished in 13th place in the field of 177 runners with a time of 25:13.36. Senior Spencer Moore finished just behind Lucas with a time of 25:19.69, good for 17th place. Freshman David Evans continued his impressive rookie campaign with a time of 25:57.08 and a 38th place finish. Junior Justin Pecore (26:07.45) and Senior John Cox (26:08.94) finished back-to-back to close out scoring for the Eagles in 45th and 46th place, respectively.

The Eagles women’s team finished their day out in eighth place overall in the field of 17 teams with a score of 209 and a first-place finish among all division III teams. Vanderbilt had an impressive race finishing first overall with a score of 42 and they were followed closely by New Orleans (89 points) and Samford (123 points). The five scoring runners for the Eagles finished the race with an average time of 23:03. Junior Annika Urban set another PR for herself as she finished the 6k with a time of 21:46.35 which was good for a seventh -place overall finish amongst the field of 151. Freshman Milan Cambon had her own career best day as she finished with a PR of 23:07.68 to finish second for the Eagles and 41st overall. Sophomore Helena Kummings (23:23.66) and junior Lauren Anshen (23:24.73) finished back-to-back coming in 55th and 56th place, respectively. Closing out scoring for the Eagles was freshman Ellie Long who finished in 65th with a time of 23:34.83.

The Emory cross country teams begin the postseason on October 30th as they travel to Rochester, NY to compete in the UAA Championships.
