Men's Cross Country Finish Third at UAB Blazer Classic; Women Take Fifth

The Emory University cross country programs took to the course Friday morning, competing in the UAB Blazer Classic in Montevallo, Alabama. The men's team finished third out of 18 programs in the 8k event while the women finished fifth out of 16 teams in the 6k race.

The No. 11 ranked men's team saw its top seven finishers inside the top 35 overall and had three runners within the top 20 as the Eagles posted a team score of 86 to trail only Mississippi College (25) and the University of Memphis (55) in the team standings.

For the women, the No. 25 ranked Eagles were led by senior Annika Urban who continued her streak of individual titles, winning her fourth consecutive meet of the season. As a team, the women placed seven runners inside the top 50 and had six within the top 36 to finish with 111 points, finishing behind Memphis (76), Mississippi College (82), North Alabama (86) and Lipscomb (87).

Senior Spencer Moore was flawless yet again for the Eagles as he turned in an eighth place finish with a personal-best time of 24:22.1, eclipsing his program record mark of 24:27 mark he ran two weeks ago at the Paul Short Run. Adding top 20 showings were senior Brett Lucas (13th, 24:32.5) and sophomore David Evans (16th, 24:50.7).

Urban paced the field of 149 runners in the 6k with her time of 20:44.5, her second straight sub-21 minute time, as she made it 4-for-4 in individual wins this season. She was one of just two runners to come in under 21 minutes, finishing ahead of Memphis' Chloe Figgins and her time of 20:53.10.

Freshman Luna McCauley was the Eagles' second-highest finisher as she placed 20th with her time of 22:32.6. Sophomore Liesl Scherrer rounded out the top three performers for the Eagles on Friday, placing 29th in a time of 22:55.6.

Additional top performers for the men's team were graduate student Ethan Thompson (24th, 25:10.1), senior Justin Pecore (25th, 25:10.3), senior Andrew Pahnke (31st, 25:25.4) and junior Tristan Olpin (34th, 25:36.6).

On the women's side, junior Helena Kummings (32nd, 22:57.3), junior Lily Taylor (33rd, 22:59.8), sophomore Jenna Daly (36th, 23:02.1) and sophomore Natalie Sandlow (50th, 23:38.0) rounded out the Eagles' top finishers.

Next up for the Eagles will be the UAA Championships on Saturday, October 29th. Emory will be serving as the host school for this year's championships with the races taking place at Nash Farm Battlefield in Hampton, Georgia.
