Satterfield Wins UAA Athlete of the Week Award

Emory University freshman Michelle Satterfield was named the University Athletic Association's (UAA) Athlete of the Week for Women's Tennis, after winning both the singles and doubles titles at the 2013 USTA/ITA South Regional Championships in Sewanee, Tennessee last weekend.

After receiving a first-round bye, Satterfield, the second-seeded player in the singles draw, went on to win each of her next five matches to claim the tournament victory.  Highlights from her singles victories include a marathon four-hour, 40-minute win over fifth-seeded teammate Madison Gordon in the semifinals (7-6 (1), 4-6, 7-6 (3)) and a straight-set 6-4, 6-2 win over sixth-seeded teammate Melissa Goodman in the finals.  In doubles play, Satterfield teamed with junior Rebecca Siegler to comprise the draw's second-seeded pair, and won four-straight matches to claim the title, including an 8-2 win over top-seeded teammates Brenna Kelly and Goodman in the finals.

Satterfield became the third Emory freshman to win the singles draw in the program's history, and the first since Serena Burkard in 2004, in addition to being the fourth Emory freshman to be a part of the winning doubles pairing.

Satterfield and Siegler will now advance to the USTA/ITA Small College Nationals in October.
