Emory Trio Garners UAA Athlete of the Week Awards

Emory University collected three University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week honors on Monday, October 11th with junior Stephanie Shulman winning the women's tennis honor and juniors Ryan Soh and Caroline Maki sweeping the swimming awards. This marks the second career honor for Maki and the first career weekly award for both Shulman and Soh.

Maki was an event winner in the 50 Freestyle and was part of two second place relays as the Eagles season got underway Saturday afternoon against Queens University of Charlotte. Maki turned in a time of 24.62 to win the 50 Freestyle and was part of the 200 Medley Relay (1:46.85, 24.34 FS split) and 200 Freestyle Relay (1:38.61, 24.90 split). Maki also competed in the 100 Freestyle, finishing fourth (top Emory finisher) with a time of 53.57.

Soh was part of two event wins and two more top-four finishes against Queens University of Charlotte Saturday afternoon as the Emory men began their 2021-22 season. Soh was an individual winner in the 100 Backstroke (50.91) and swam leadoff in Emory's first-place 200 Medley Relay (1:30.34, 23.04 BS split). Soh added a fourth place solo touch in the 100 Butterfly (50.94) and swam the anchor leg for Emory's B team in the 200 Freestyle Relay that placed third at 1:26.64 (21.12 split).

Shulman captured the GATA E Singles draw title at the Georgia Southern Shootout this weekend, defeating Davidson's Linden Patterson 6-4, 6-2 and Georgia State's Pragnya Kumar 6-4, 6-3 on her way to the draw victory. Shulman added a 1-1 record with freshman Arya Dudipala in doubles, falling to a team from Arkansas State in the first match before beating Georgia Southern's Goines/Hijos, 6-3, in the consolation final.

The women's tennis team will send competitors to the ITA Cup this weekend before closing out the fall schedule with the Wofford Invitational at the end of the month. For Emory swimming & diving, the Eagles are idle this weekend before taking on Birmingham-Southern on Saturday, October 23rd in Birmingham, AL.
