Eagles Collect Four UAA Athlete of the Week Honors

Emory University earned four University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week honors as announced by the league office Monday evening. The awards were spread across four different sports with freshman Ellen Dong winning for women's golf, seniors Emma Cartledge and Andrew Esses winning in tennis and the men's 4x400m Relay team of graduate student Liam Fost, senior Thomas Davis, sophomore Dawit Dean and freshman Jackson Price winning for outdoor track.

Dong became the second golfer in Emory history to win an individual national championship as she led the Eagles to their first-ever national championship this past week in Houston. Dong broke the individual four-round record with a four-day total of 289 and defeated George Fox's Alison Takamiya in a one-hole playoff to win the individual crown. Dong was one of three players to finish inside the top-17 as Emory smashed the NCAA Championship record to win the team title by an impressive 26 strokes.

Cartledge went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles to lead the Eagles to convincing wins over Piedmont and Sewanee, advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the 14th straight time. Cartledge teamed with junior Alexa Goetz for 8-4 and 8-7 (4) wins at the No. 2 doubles spot this weekend and dominated in singles to the tune of 6-1, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-3 victories at the No. 1 spot in both matches.

Esses went 2-0 singles and added a win in one of his two doubles matches to lead Emory to another NCAA Quarterfinals berth, defeating both UMW and Trinity in comeback fashion. Esses won both his singles matches in straight sets 7-6, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-1 while adding a win at No. 1 doubles with sophomore Nolan Shah, 8-1, against Mary Washington on Saturday.

The Emory men's 4x400m relay team was impressive this past weekend at the Lee University Last Chance Meet, breaking the school record on their way to qualifying for nationals. The group of Davis, Fost, Dean and Price ran a blistering 3:12.76 to break the eight-year team record. With their time, they moved up to third in Division III and first in the UAA.

The awards represent the third for Esses in his career, the second-ever for Cartledge, Dong, Fost and Price as well as the first for Davis and Dean.
