Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: May 23rd - 29th

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for May 23rd – May 29th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

Women's Tennis:

The Emory University women's tennis team will take on the Wesleyan University Cardinals in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships on Monday at 3:00 PM in Orlando, FL. The No. 8 ranked Eagles (10-9) will face-off against No. 3 Cardinals (22-0) in a rematch of last year's National Championship. Emory cruised into the quarterfinals with a 5-0 victory over Piedmont in the second round and another convincing 5-0 win over Sewanee in the third round. Wesleyan defeated Stevens, 5-0 in the second round before playing a tighter match in the third round against Mary Washington where they pulled out a 5-2 win.

The winner of the Emory and Wesleyan match will advance to the semifinals on Tuesday, May 24 to take on the winner of the matchup between No. 4 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and No. 7 ranked MIT. The Eagles and Cardinals are tied 3-3 all-time in head-to-head matchups with the most recent match coming earlier this season and was won by Wesleyan 6-3.

In addition to the team championship, three Eagles qualified for the individual tournament: freshman Eliza McPherron in singles and sophomore Ana Cristina Perez and senior Christina Watson in doubles. The brackets for the individual tournaments will be released early this week and the first rounds of action will take place on Friday, May 27.

Men's Tennis:

The Emory University men's tennis team will face off against the University of Chicago Maroons in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships on Monday at 12:00 PM in Orlando, FL. The No. 13 ranked and two-time reigning champion Eagles (10-10) get the opportunity to take on conference foe and No. 1 ranked Chicago (19-1) in their first meeting of the season. Emory has played two tightly contested matches to get to this point of the tournament. The Eagles defeated No. 18 ranked Mary Washington in the second round in a come from behind 5-3 victory before taking down No. 8 ranked Trinity in an even tighter 5-4 match to earn their 22nd consecutive trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals. Chicago had a simpler path to the quarterfinals defeating Illinois Tech 5-0 in the second round before taking care of business against No. 16 ranked Gustavus Adolphus 5-2 in the third round. The Eagles hold a 14-2 all-time series advantage over the Maroons but Chicago has won both of the most recent matchups between the two squads.

The Eagles had three athletes qualify for the individual championships as well: senior Antonio Mora in singles and senior Andrew Esses and sophomore Nolan Shah in doubles. The brackets for the individual tournaments will be released on the evening of Monday, May 23 with the first round of play set to take place on Friday, May 27.

Track & Field:

The Emory University outdoor track & field team will send a contingent of athletes to compete at the NCAA DIII Outdoor Championships in Geneva, OH on Friday, May 27 through Sunday, May 29. The men's team will send six different athletes to compete in three total events while the women will send one athlete to compete in two events.

The men's 4x400 relay team, the highest seeded event for the Eagles, consisting of senior Thomas Davis, graduate student Liam Fost, sophomore Dawit Dean and freshman Jackson Price posted the third fastest time in the country at the Lee University Last Chance meet crossing the finish line in 3:12.76 which is also the fastest time in program history. The men's 4x100 relay team, consisting of Davis, Fost, Price and freshman Sam Ryba, qualified as well with a season best time of 41.14 coming at the Emory Final Qualifier. Senior Spencer Moore qualified in the 3,000m steeplechase with his season-best time coming at the Lee University Last Chance as well where he registered a time of 9:05.24. Junior Annika Urban qualified for the championships by posting a program record time of 16:50.93 in the 5000m at the Lee University Last Chance meet which sees her seed 16th in the nation and added a qualifying mark of 4:34.84 in the 1500m.

The NCAA Championships are set to begin Thursday, May 26th with the Eagles set to compete in the preliminaries of the men's 4x100m relay, women's 1500m, men's 3000m steeplechase and men's 4x400m relay. Saturday, May 28th will feature the finals of women's 5000m run as well as the finals of the four other events should the Eagles qualify.
