Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: February 20-26

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for February 20th – February 26th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

 

Indoor Track & Field:

The Emory University indoor track & field team approaches the end of the indoor season as the team is set to take part in the UAA Indoor Championships in Waltham, Massachusetts this weekend. The women enter the UAA Championship as the No. 14 ranked team nationally which places them third in the conference behind No. 2 ranked WashU and No. 5 Chicago. The men come into the championships ranked No. 22 in the nation which sees them as the top ranked team in the UAA. At the 2022 UAA Indoor Championships, the men finished in fourth place, their highest finish since 2017, while the women also registered a fourth place finish at the meet. The men return four All-UAA Performers from last year. Sophomore Jackson Price was named the UAA Rookie of the Year as he was an All-UAA performer in the 60m dash (1st place), 200m dash (2nd place) and the 4x400 relay (3rd place) along with fellow returners junior Dawit Dean and sophomore Chriz Belz. Also turning in an All-UAA performance at last year's championship was junior Kenya Sei who turned in a third place result in the weight throw. The women return single All-UAA recipient in sophomore Sarah Fineman who turned in a second place finish in the shot put. The men have won seven total UAA Indoor Championships with the most recent one coming in 2009. The women have won three total UAA Indoor Championships with their most recent crown coming in the 2013 season.

Swimming & Diving:

The Emory University swimming & diving team divers will take part in the NCAA Region 2 Diving Championships in the Woodruff PE Center. The six divers on the men's and women's diving teams each qualified for the NCAA regional event which will take place in the Woodruff PE Center on Friday, February 24th and Saturday, February 25th. Competing for the Eagles are two men, senior Luca Bumgarner and junior Alex York, and four women, senior Rose Gertzman, sophomore Ariana Khan, junior Tess Klugherz and senior Lanah Petrillo.

Men's Tennis:

After opening the Spring season with back-to-back wins last week, the Emory University men's tennis team is back in action this week with a match against a conference foe before taking part in one of the premiere regular season tournaments later in the week. The No. 10 ranked Eagles (2-0) will begin the week at home with a match against the Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs (5-1) on Tuesday at 2:00 PM before traveling to St. Peter, Minnesota for the ITA Indoor Championships where the Eagles will take on the Case Western Reserve Spartans in the first round on Friday. The match against Tennessee Wesleyan will be played on the indoor courts in the Woodruff PE Center. The Eagles come into the ITA Indoor Championships seeded seventh and will face off against the second seeded Spartans in the quarterfinals. The semi-finals and finals will be played at still to be determined times on Saturday and Sunday, respectively with consolation rounds taking place on Saturday and Sunday as well. The No. 1 ranked Chicago Maroons drew the first overall seed for the tournament with the No. 5 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags rounding out the top three seeds for the tournament. The Eagles have won nine total ITA National Indoor Championships in the event's 21-year history including most recently in 2020.

Women's Basketball:

The Emory University women's basketball team, coming off a convincing 76-53 victory over Brandeis on Sunday, is fighting for an opportunity at a postseason berth as they have one final regular season game this Saturday. The Eagles (16-7, 7-6 UAA) will face off against the Rochester Yellowjackets (16-8, 6-7 UAA) on Saturday at 12:00 PM in Rochester, New York as both teams look to bolster their resumes with a chance at making the NCAA DIII Tournament. The Eagles are 28-37 against the Yellowjackets all-time, including winning four of the past seven matchups between the two, with Rochester having won their matchup 75-66 earlier this season. The Eagles recognized their senior class against Brandeis on Sunday with Charlotte Lowndes, Claire Brock and Mariane Auza earning recognition before the game. Sophomore Daniella Aronsky is two assists shy of breaking Linsey Tse's single season total assists record of 155 and continues to lead the nation in assists per game at 6.7 per contest.

Men's Basketball:

After a thrilling win over Brandeis in which freshman Benjamin Pearce knocked down a game-clinching three pointer in the closing seconds of the game, the Emory University men's basketball team is back in action this weekend for its final game of the regular season. The Eagles (16-8, 7-6 UAA) look to earn a win this weekend to bolster their resume for a chance at a postseason berth as they are set to take on the Rochester Yellowjackets (16-8, 6-7 UAA) on Saturday at 2:00 PM in Rochester, New York. The Eagles sport a 33-36 record against the Yellowjackets including a current six-game winning streak with the most recent win coming in the form of an 87-76 victory on the Woodruff PE Center floor back in early January. Before the crunch-time victory over Brandeis on Sunday, the Eagles took a moment to recognize their senior class of JJ Halaby, Mason Johnson, Greg Lawrence and Dubem Nnake in a special ceremony to acknowledge all they have accomplished in their time as Eagles. With the game tied at 67 apiece and three seconds remaining on the clock, Head Coach Jason Zimmerman designed an out-of-bounds play that freed up Pearce for an open corner three look that he calmly swished, earning the Eagles their 16th win of the season.

Baseball:

The Emory University baseball team, coming off of their first win of the season, is back in action this week for four more high octane games against regional foes. The Eagles (1-1) will travel to LaGrange, Georgia for a matchup with the LaGrange Panthers (2-1) on Wednesday at 7:00 PM before hosting crosstown rival Ogelthorpe (0-4) for a three-game weekend series. The Eagles sport a convincing 36-17 record against the Panthers all-time, however, they are currently on a miniature three-game losing streak with their last win coming in the Spring of 2021. Emory holds a 54-21 all-time record all-time against Oglethorpe with the Eagles having won five of the last six matchups including a 7-4 win on February 14th. Senior Joey Bock earned his first win of the season in his debut against Oglethorpe last week as he went five innings and only gave up one run.

Softball:

After kicking off their season with a 2-2 series split this past weekend, the Emory University softball team is back in action for a home-and-home series with crosstown rival Agnes Scott. The Eagles (2-2) will face off against the Agnes Scott Scotties (2-4) at their field on Thursday at 5:00 PM before getting another chance against the Scotties at Cooper Field on Saturday 1:00 PM. The Eagles are a perfect 36-0 against the Scotties all-time with the most recent matchup resulting in a 9-7 victory in one of the closer contests between the two teams. Senior Tyler Miller and freshman Mackenzie Duford were named the UAA Softball Athletes of the Week for their efforts in the Eagles opening weekend. Miller finished the four game weekend with eight RBI and seven hits which included two home runs against LaGrange. Duford pitched 16 total innings on the weekend including a complete game in the 11-inning thriller against the Panthers on Saturday in which she gave up just one walk and struck out six batters.

Women's Tennis:

The Emory University women's tennis will play their first home match of the Spring season on Friday, February 24th at 3:00 PM when they are set to take on SCAD. The Eagles will follow that match up with a match against Columbus State in Columbus, Georgia at 1:00 PM on Saturday. The match against SCAD marks a rematch from the Fall semester in which the Eagles took them down in resounding 9-0 fashion to bring their all-time record to 6-0. The Eagles are 3-4 against Columbus State all-time with the most recent match ending in a 2-7 result in favor of Columbus State in 2022. Against Georgia Gwinnett both Senior Stephanie Shulman and freshman Emily Kantrovitz earned singles wins in tight three-set decisions over each of their opponents.
