Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: October 2nd - October 8th

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for October 2nd – 8th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

 

Women's Soccer:

After getting started with UAA-play last weekend, the No. 15 Emory women's soccer team (4-2-2) will return home for a non-conference match with Covenant this week. The Eagles will also keep their conference schedule going over the weekend, as they are set to take a trip to Cleveland, Ohio to take on No. 6 ranked Case Western Reserve University.

Following the in-state match against Covenant, Emory will go toe-to-toe with another strong defensive team in Case Western Reserve this weekend. The Spartans have held their opponents to just 0.30 goals per game, allowing just 6.1 shots by opponents. The Eagles will look to flip the script on the Spartans and pick up their first UAA win of the season.

Men's Tennis:

The Emory men's tennis brought hardware home from the ITA South Regional, with senior Nolan Shah and sophomore Dean Kamenev winning the doubles championship. Kamenev also finished as the runner-up in the singles draw. The Eagles head to the Grizzly Open this weekend, looking to build on their success at the ITA Regional. The event will be a one day round robin tournament.

Volleyball:

The No. 6 Emory volleyball team (11-0) continued its dominant start to the season this past weekend, handling in-state rival Berry 3-0 to inch closer to the best start to a season in program history. The Eagles can tie the program record for most consecutive wins to start a season at home on Friday against Maryville. Emory will then take on NYU and Case Western Reserve at the second of three UAA Round Robin events.

Under the leadership of first-year head coach Brianna Jones, the Eagles have dropped just five sets over 11 matches, with seven of the matches being 3-0 sweeps. Junior Alana Dawson has spearheaded the Eagles' strong offensive play, leading the team with 91 kills.

Swimming and Diving:

The Emory swimming and diving team will be back in the pool for its first intercollegiate meet of the season on Saturday, taking on Queens University of Charlotte. The men's team is coming off the heels of back-to-back national championships and the women finished second for the second consecutive year last spring. The meet on Saturday will be a clash of two powerhouses, as Queens University of Charlotte has won seven of the last eight NCAA Division II National Championships. With a plethora of NCAA National Champions in the pool, Saturday's meet is set to be a thrilling one.

Men's Soccer:

The No. 10 Emory men's soccer team (7-1-2) started their UAA slate off with a 2-0 win over WashU this past weekend. The Eagles will look to keep it rolling in conference play this weekend, with Case Western Reserve due up next on the schedule. The story of the season has been the incredible defensive play from the Eagles' backline and senior goalkeeper Peter Wagner. Wagner, a two-time UAA Player of the Week this season, has turned in six clean sheets and is yet to allow more than one goal in a game through 10 matches. The Eagles offense has capitalized on the strong play from the defense, outscoring opponents 15-4 this season. Colton Myers scored his team leading fifth goal in the Eagles' match against WashU. The Eagles will hope to keep it rolling this weekend to stay undefeated in conference play this year.
