Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: October 23rd - October 29th

The Emory Athletics Weekly Preview for October 23rd – 29th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming Emory athletic events for the coming week.

 

Cross Country:

The Emory men's and women's cross country will have an opportunity to raise a banner this weekend as they make the trip to Hunting Valley, Ohio for the 2023 UAA Championships. All eight members of the UAA will send a team of runners, making for a very deep field. The men's team is looking to defend its title, having won the meet last year for the first time in program history. Freshman Kirin Karver has led the Eagles in every meet he has participated in and will compete in his first UAA Championship this weekend.

The women's team is looking to win its first UAA Championship since the 2001 season. However, with new faces leading the way, the women's team is positioned to make a run at their first UAA Championship in over two decades.

Men's Golf:

Fresh off a UAA Championship, the No. 1 Emory men's golf team will play in two events this upcoming week. The first competition is the Chick-fil-A College Invitational, which will take place on Monday and Tuesday at Stonebridge Golf Club in Rome, Georgia. The competition will consist of two rounds over the course of both days. Head coach John Sjoberg is sending his B and C squads to Rome for the competition.

The Eagles will travel west at the end of the week to participate in the NCAA Fall National Preview in Boulder City, Nevada. The event at Boulder Creek Golf Club will consist of three rounds over the course of three days from Sunday, October 29th-Tuesday, October 31st.

Women's Soccer:

After picking up two wins in three games and scoring 11 goals last week, the Emory women's soccer team (7-4-3) will play in two more matches this week. The Eagles will first welcome the Maryville Scots to the Woodruff P.E. Center on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup in the final home game of the regular season. The Scots bring a prolific offense and seven-game winning streak to Atlanta, providing the Eagles with a big test early this week.

The Eagles will then travel north to Chicago, Illinois to take on Chicago for another UAA match. The Maroons carry a 1-1-3 conference record into the match with the Eagles, having played to two draws against two of the UAA's top teams in Case Western Reserve and Carnegie Mellon this past weekend.

Volleyball

The No. 5 Emory volleyball team (16-1) pulled away from its UAA competition this past weekend, securing the top seed in the UAA Tournament after wins over Brandeis and No. 12 WashU. Having the upcoming weekend off from conference play, the Eagles will travel to Danville, Virginia for a pair of matches against Averett and No. 22 Mary Washington. The Eagles are carrying a strong offensive attack led by juniors Alana Dawson and Madison Cail, who combined for 48 kills in their two UAA matches last weekend.

Men's Soccer:

The No. 7 Emory men's soccer team (11-1-3), fresh off clinching the UAA Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, will travel to the Windy City to take on No. 24 Chicago. The Maroons are coming off a conference victory over Carnegie Mellon this past weekend, notching five goals in the win. The Eagles will look to stay undefeated in UAA-play this season this weekend.

The Eagles dominated NYU this past weekend to clinch the UAA Championship, ripping off four goals in the first half. Since falling to No. 1 Mary Washington, the Eagles haven't lost in nine straight games, dating back to September 17th. 11 wins and counting are also the highest amount of wins in a single season since Head Coach Cory Greiner's first year at the helm in 2017 when they won 15 matches.
