Pinckney then signed with the Red Sox who assigned him to their short-season affiliate, the Lowell (Mass.) Spinners of the New York-Pennsylvania League. The Spinners begin their 76-game schedule (in 79 days) June 18.

Pinckney is the third Eagle drafted since Emory reinstated its varsity program in 1991 after a 100-year absence. Twin brothers and pitchers Scott and Jeff Kramer were both drafted in 1994, Scott in the 13th round by the Cleveland Indians and Jeff in the 30th round by the Milwaukee Brewers. Neither made it to the major leagues.

Pinckney was a first-team All-American last season, the first Emory position player ever so honored. He batted .415, topping the .400 plateau for the second year in a row.

(June 1) Emory University sophomore Sam Cunningham has been voted to the Academic All-America third team for baseball. Previously, he made the Academic All-District first team.

The Academic All-America team honors the best student-athletes. Voting is conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Cunningham had a 3.91 cumulative grade point average while pursuing a double major in economics and environmental studies. As the team's primary designated hitter, Cunningham had a .352 batting average.

Cunningham is the seventh Emory player, all since 1998, to be named an Academic All-American.

Pinckney batted .415, his second consecutive .400 season. The junior could become the first Emory player ever with three .400 seasons.
