EMORY ENDS SEASON WITH 9-7 LOSS TO SALISBURY

(May 18) The ninth-ranked Emory baseball team saw its season come to a close with a 9-7 loss to fifth-ranked Salisbury (Md.) in an elimination game of NCAA Regional play.

Emory carried a 7-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning when Salisbury exploded for six runs to take a 9-7 lead. The Sea Gulls would then hold the Eagles scoreless in the ninth for the win.

Emory concludes the season with a record of 31-9 and a University Athletic Association record of 6-0. This season marked the Eagles seventh UAA Championship and first since 2004. The Eagles have won four conference championships under head coach Mike Twardowski.

The Eagles were also ranked No. 1 in the country for the first time since the 2001 season and for the second time in program history.

EMORY FALLS TO NORTH CAROLINA WESLEYAN 7-3

(May 17) In game two of the NCAA Division III Baseball South Regional, fifth-seeded North Carolina Wesleyan (28-16) won its seventh straight contest and recorded the second upset of the day, downing second-seeded Emory (31-8) by a 7-3 score.

The Bishops jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second.  Mark Wooten reached on an error to start the inning, and Kenny Flythe followed with a fielder's choice that saw Wooten slide into second safely.  Shortstop Nathan West then ripped a two-run double to left and promptly scored on a Brad Gardner RBI-double to left-center that gave NC Wesleyan at 3-0 advantage.

Emory answered in the bottom half of the frame with two runs on four singles and an NCWC fielding error.  Griffin Baum and Frank Pfister each singled and scored to spark the Eagle rally that ended with the Bishops holding a slim 3-2 lead.

NC Wesleyan, however, extended its lead to 5-2 in the fifth.  Second baseman Ryan Snyder connected on a two-run single to centerfield that plated Chris Pecora and Rob Johnson, who had each singled to start the inning.

The Bishops added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth RBIs by Wooten and Pecora to go up 7-2, and hurler Blake Rice did the rest on the mound.  Rice (9-2) tossed his tenth complete game of the season, scattering nine hits and allowing just three runs.

Jason Glushon (9-2) took the loss for the Eagles after giving up six runs on eleven hits in seven innings of work.

Pecora was 3-for-5 at the plate to pace the Bishops offensively.

Emory next faces top-seeded Salisbury at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday in an elimination contest.


EMORY CHOSEN FOR NCAA REGIONAL PLAY

(May 15) The ninth-ranked Emory baseball team was chosen to compete in the 2006 NCAA Regionals, May 17-20. The Eagles are the No. 2 seed in the North Carolina Wesleyan Regional in Rocky Mount, N.C.

The seeds for the regional are as follows: No. 1 Salisbury (38-8), No. 2 Emory (31-7), No. 3 Rowan (27-13), No. 4 Bridgewater (31-12-1), No. 5 North Carolina Wesleyan (27-16) and No. 6 Virginia Wesleyan (22-20).

The first day of tournament action has Salisbury facing Virginia Wesleyan at 10:00 a.m., Emory versus North Carolina Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m. and Rowan versus Bridgewater at 4:00 p.m.

This marks Emory's eighth appearance in the post season. Twice they have advanced to the Division III World Series in 2000 and 2003.

The Division III championship provides for a maximum field of 53 teams. Six teams will compete at three first-round sites; seven teams will compete at five first-round sites. All first rounds will use a double-elimination format. Thirty-two conference champions qualified automatically. Winners of the eight first-round tournaments will qualify for the double-elimination championship at Appleton, Wisconsin, May 26-30.


JUSTIN GORDON AND TRAVIS LANGLEY NAMED COSIDA FIRST TEAM ALL-DISTRICT

(May 11) Justin Gordon and Travis Langley of the ninth-ranked Emory baseball team were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First team for the 2005-06 school year.

This marks the second time to receive this honor both players. Gordon was a first team honoree last year, while Langley was named to the first team in 2004. Last season Gordon also received third team Academic All-America honors.

Both players are now eligible for Academic All-America honors for this year.

Serving as a senior co-captain, Gordon has been a solid contributor for the Emory University baseball team this season. The starting second baseman is currently batting .352 with 45 hits, 24 runs and 19 RBI.  He is also a perfect 12-12 in stolen bases, which stands for second-most on the team. He is majoring in Chemistry and has a GPA of 3.91.

This season Langley is batting .265 and scored 12 runs, while sporting one of the top on-base percentages on the team at .446. He is majoring in Chemistry and has a GPA of 3.96.

To be eligible, a nominee must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 GPA and a starter or key reserve on their team. Emory nominees are placed in the "college division" category, which is composed of all NCAA Division II and III and NAIA schools.


EMORY-LAGRANGE GAME CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER

(April 27) The Emory-LaGrange baseball game was postponed due to weather Wednesday evening. The Eagles finish the regular season with a No. 9 national ranking and a record of 31-7. They now await word on postseason play.


EMORY CLAIMS DOUBLE-HEADER SWEEP OVER METHODIST COLLEGE

(April 23) The ninth-ranked Emory baseball team returned to its winning ways with an important double-header sweep over south region opponent Methodist College (N.C.) Emory won the games 13-3 and 14-11.

Emory exploded in the first game to win 13-3. Taking the win for the Eagles was Jason Glushon, who now stands 9-1 on the year.

Justin Gordon finished the game a perfect 4-4, scoring three runs and adding two RBI. Griffin Baum went 3-4, scoring two runs and adding a game-high four RBI. Sam Cunningham and Frank Pfister also turned in solid performances, with Cunningham scoring two runs and adding two RBI and Pfister recording two RBI as well.

The second game saw the Eagles come from behind in a 14-11 win. Getting the win was Rich Babb (3-2), while Ian Ganzer recorded the save (3).

Gordon continued his successful afternoon, going 3-6 with two doubles, two RBI and one run scored. Baum recorded three more RBI, while Cunningham had two RBI and one run scored.

Tim Cournoyer helped to put the game away in the ninth with his team-leading fourth home run of the year.

Trailing 7-5 going into the top of the 8th, Emory responded with five runs to take a 10-5 lead. The Monarchs came back with two runs to cut the margin to one heading into the final inning.

Emory tacked on four more runs to build the lead to five at 14-9 and held off a Monarch rally that included two runs for the final score of 14-11.

Emory concludes the regular season on Wednesday when it travels to LaGrange, Ga., to face LaGrange College. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.


EMORY FALLS TO GREENSBORO 8-5

(April 21) The ninth-ranked Emory baseball team dropped a hard-fought 8-5 decision to the Greensboro College Pride on Friday evening in Greensboro, N.C.

Taking the loss for the Eagles was Ian Ganzer, who now stands 6-3 on the season.

Emory continues its swing through North Carolina when it travels to Fayetteville to face Methodist College. The Eagles and Monarchs are set to play two contests over the next two days with the first game being played Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and the second on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.


EMORY DROPS 11-4 DECISION TO MILLSAPS

(April 15) The Emory baseball team dropped an 11-4 decision to Millsaps College (Miss.) on Saturday afternoon at Chappell Park.

Ryan Lollar turned in a solid performance for the Eagles, finishing the afternoon 1-3, while scoring two runs. Sam Cunningham and Brandon Custer each drove in two runs, while Cunningham was 1-2 and Custer 1-1.

Keith Meizler took the loss for the Eagles, going two innings and giving up two runs on three hits. With the loss, Meizler now stands at 0-3 on the year.

Millsaps built a 5-0 lead after the first three innings, scoring three in the third frame. The Majors added three more in the fifth before the Eagles scored two in the seventh.

Millsaps added three more runs over the eighth and ninth, while Emory scored two in the ninth for the final score of 11-4.

Emory (29-6) is off until Friday, April 21, when it travels to Greensboro, N.C., to take on Greensboro College at 6:00 p.m.


EMORY FALLS TO MILLSAPS IN EXTRA INNINGS

(April 14) Emory University (29-5), ranked first in the country by the American Baseball Coaches Association, lost to Millsaps College (Miss.) (25-9) 6-5 in 10 innings.

The Eagles, trailing by four funs going into the 7th inning, scored four runs off of four hits to tie the game.  Justin Gordon, 3-for-5 on the day, and Tim Cournoyer both hit 2-RBI doubles, knocking in Griffin Baum, David Murchison, David Hissey and Justin Gordon.

Senior Bryan Langboard went 2-for-5 on the day with an RBI in the third inning.  Starting catcher Baum went 2-for-3, scoring a run.

Ian Ganzer (5-2, 1.78 ERA) picked up the loss after coming in as relief in the 7th inning for starter Jason Glushon (8-1, 1.50 ERA). 

Millsaps scored the winning run in the top of the 10th off of an error.

The Eagles play their final home game against Millsaps tomorrow at noon.


EAGLES FALL 10-8 TO HUNTINGDON

(April 11) The Emory baseball team dropped a hard-fought 10-8 decision to Huntingdon College on the road Tuesday night in Montgomery, Ala.

Emory was led by Tim Cournoyer and Sam Cunningham with a home run each. Cournoyer's home run was his third of the season, while Cunningham recorded his first. David Hissey finished the contest 4-4 and scored three of the eight Eagle runs.

Taking the loss for Emory was Rich Babb, who now stands 2-2 on the season.

The contest was back-and-forth through the first four innings, with Huntingdon holding a 4-3 lead. The Eagles erupted for four runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to take an 8-4 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. The Hawks then held Emory scoreless over the final three innings, while scoring three in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the ninth for the win.

The top-ranked Eagles (29-4) return to action, Friday, April 14 when they welcome Millsaps College (Miss.) to Chappell Park for a 3:00 p.m. contest.


LANGBORD SETS EMORY RECORD IN WIN

(April 9) Bryan Langbord hit his record-setting 60th career double, helping Emory University, the top-ranked team in the nation, to a 10-0 win over Piedmont College.

Langbord entered the game tied with Kyle Foster ('03) and Ted Karniewicz ('00) for the school record in career doubles.  With a runner on second base and one out in the bottom of the eighth, Langbord came to the plate for his final at-bat of the game.  The senior co-captain doubled to deep left center, driving in a run while setting the new Emory record.  Langbord finished the day one-for-three with two runs scored.

Mike Kerfeld and Rich Babb combined for the shutout, the team's sixth of the season and third in the last six games.  Kerfeld allowed five hits in seven and two thirds innings pitched, striking out two for the win.  Kerfeld is now 5-0 this season with a 0.99 earned run average, the lowest among all Emory starters this season.

After winning two out of three this weekend from Piedmont, Emory improves to 29-3 for the season.  The Eagles will next head to Montgomery, AL to play Huntingdon College, before coming back to Chappell Park for their final home stand of the year next weekend.


EMORY SPLITS WITH PIEDMONT

(April 8) The Emory baseball team split a double-header with Piedmont College (Ga.), Saturday. Piedmont won the first contest 5-1, while Emory took the second 7-3.

The first contest saw Jason Glushon take the loss, dropping his record to 8-1 on the season. In the game, David Hissey led the way, going 2-4, scoring the lone run. Tim Cournoyer recorded the RBI that scored Hissey.

In the second contest, Ian Ganzer improved to 6-1 on the season in the 7-3 victory.

Justin Gordon was a perfect 3-3, scoring a run and recording two RBI. Frank Pfister, Kai Beasley and Ryan Lollar each had two hits a piece. Pfister, as well as Bo Schill each scored two runs.

Up next for the Eagles is the third meeting with Piedmont in two days. The Eagles welcome the Lions to Chappell Park, for a 2:00 p.m. contest.


EAGLES SHUT OUT OGLETHORPE 3-0

(April 5) The top-ranked Emory baseball team defeated home-standing Oglethorpe University 3-0 on Wednesday night. The Eagles move to 27-2 on the year and sweep the season series from the Stormy Petrels.

Picking up the win for the Eagles was Tom Mieczkowski. Mieckowski went eight and two-thirds innings, allowing no runs and six hits for the game. He now stands 4-0 on the season with an ERA of 1.94.

Frank Pfister led the Emory offensive attack, going 3-4 and scoring a run. Scoring the other two Emory runs were Griffin Baum and Sam Cunningham.

Taylor Gettinger provided two of the three RBI for the game, with Cunningham recording the third.

Emory took all three games from the Petrels this season, winning 5-1 on Feb. 16 at Chappell Park and 10-0 on March 2 at Oglethorpe.

Up next for the blue and gold is a trip to Demorest, Ga., for a double-header with the Piedmont College Lions. Game time for the first contest is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.


EMORY RANKED NO. 1 IN THE COUNTRY

(April 3) The Emory baseball team received the No. 1 ranking in the country this week by the American Baseball Coaches Association. The Eagles (26-2) have six of the eight first-place votes and 238 points.

This marks the first time since the 2001 season and second time in program history that the Eagles have reached the top ranking in the country.

Emory was previously ranked No. 3 in last week's poll, but earned five wins this past week over Depauw University, two over the University of the South (Tenn.) and two over No. 19 LaGrange to up its current win streak to eight.

With the top ranking and 238 points, the blue and gold hold a nine point lead over No. 2 Wooster College (Ohio) who has 229 and one first-place vote. New Jersey, the previous No. 1-ranked team, stands third with 221 points and the final first-place vote.

While being the top-ranked team in the country, the Eagles are ranked No. 1 in the South Region. Of the nine teams ranked in the South Region, five are ranked in the top 30 and one is receiving votes. Emory is No. 1, while Mary Washington University (Va.) is No. 8, Salisbury University (Md.) is No. 13, LaGrange College (Ga.) is No. 23 and Bridgewater College (Va.) is No, 29. Receiving votes is Methodist College (N.C.).

The 2006 season has already seen Emory win the UAA Championship with a perfect 6-0 record, while also putting together a 19 game win streak.

The Eagles will put their top ranking to the test Wednesday night, when they travel across the city to face rival Oglethorpe University. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.


EAGLES EARNS TWO WINS OVER LAGRANGE

(April 1) Emory University (26-2), ranked third in Division III by the American Baseball Coaches Association, defeated LaGrange College (20-6), ranked 19th in Division III, 6-2 and 3-2 in Atlanta.

The Eagles and the Panthers completed the first game originally played on March 9th, which had been suspended due to an injury on the field.  The Eagles gave up one run on three hits over the last two innings.

In the second game, starter Jason Glushon pitched seven innings striking out four and allowing only one run.  Glushon improves to 8-0 on the season and has a 1.25 ERA, third on the team among pitchers with a win.  Glushon is now 15-0 as an Emory Eagle.

Third baseman Frank Pfister and second basemen Taylor Gettinger both went 2-for-4 on the day with a run; Pfister also knocked in an RBI.  Senior outfielder Bryan Langboard went 1-for-3 with a double, his team-leading 11th on the season and 59th of his career tied for first all-time at Emory with Kyle Foster (2000-2003).

Sam Cunningham pinch-hit in the 6th inning and knocked in the Taylor Gettinger for the winning run.  LaGrange scored one run in the 8th to cut the lead to one.  In the top of the 9th LaGrange had runners at second and third with two outs, when Tom Mieczkowski came into the game and struck out the last batter for the victory.  Mieczkowski picked up his first save of the season.  Both, Rich Babb and Mieczkowski, struck out the last batter to end the games, respectively.

Emory plays Wednesday, April 5th at Oglethorpe University at 7 p.m.


EAGLES SWEEP DOUBLE-HEADER FROM SEWANEE

(March 30) The third-ranked Emory baseball team took a double-header from homestanding Sewanee-University of the South on Thursday. The Eagles took game one 5-4, before winning 4-0 to close out the day.

During the first game, Emory tied the contest at four on a David Hissey solo home run. The home run was the first of his Emory career. From there Emory took the lead in the seventh to get the win off Frank Pfister's two-out RBI single up the middle that scored Griffin Baum.

Ryan Lumsden got the win for the Eagles with Rich Babb being credited with the save. Lumsden now stands 3-0 on the season, while Babb earned his third save of the year.

The second game was highlighted by the pitching performance of Mike Kerfeld. Kerfeld threw a complete game, allowing just two hits. He now stands 4-0 on the season.

Pfister was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Tim Cournoyer and Bryan Langbord each had doubles.

Emory returns to the diamond Saturday, April 1, when it faces LaGrange College (Ga.). The two squads will resume the game suspended from March 9, at 1:00 p.m. The regularly scheduled contest will begin at 2:00 p.m.

DAVID HISSEY NAMED UAA PLAYER OF THE YEAR

(March 29) Emory sophomore stand-out David Hissey was name the 2006 UAA Baseball Player of the Year, highlighting five players for the Eagles who were named all conference.

Also earning first team all conference honors were Ian Ganzer, Bryan Langbord and Frank Pfister. Jason Glushon was named to the second team.

Hissey led the conference tournament in batting with a percentage of .619. He finished with 13 hits, while recording six RBI and scoring three runs. He also had an on-base percentage of .680. Hissey also led the tournament in stolen bases, going 5-6.

Ganzer turned in a solid performance from the pitching mound, going 1-0 with an ERA of 1.17. For the tournament he pitched 7.2 innings, allowing eight hits and just one run scored. He also had 11 strike outs. This marks Ganzer's second consecutive year on the first team.

Langbord finished the tournament with a batting average of .571, which was good enough for third best in the tournament. He collected 12 hits, while scoring seven runs and six RBI. He also had a home run. Langbord led the team in total bases with 18, with an on-base percentage of .625.

Rounding out the first team members was Pfister. Pfister hit .409 for the tournament, while recording nine hits and six RBI and scoring three runs.

On the second team, Glushon finished the tournament with a record of 1-0 and an ERA of 2.89. He pitched 9.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, while stiking out 13.

This year's championship marked the seventh UAA Championships for the Eagles and first since 2004. The Eagles have now won four conference championships under head coach Mike Twardoski.


EMORY TAKES DOWN DEPAUW 8-1

(March 28) The Emory baseball squad won its first game after being ranked No. 3 in the country Tuesday afternoon at Chappell Park. The Eagles defeated Depauw University by a score of 8-1.

Picking up the win for the Eagles (22-2) was Jason Glushon, who now stands 6-0 on the season. For the game he struck out six batters, and allowing the one run. Glushon's six strike-outs adds to his team-leading total which now stands at 53.

Tim Cournoyer led the offensive attack for the Eagles with his second home run of the season. Cournoyer went deep in the bottom of the fourth to give the Eagles the lead at 1-0. He finished the day 1-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Frank Pfister finished the day 1-2 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Mike Levin was 3-4 with one RBI.

After Depauw tied Emory in the top of the fifth at one, the Eagles answered with another run in the bottom of the fifth and five runs in the sixth to put the game away. The blue and gold scored one more run in the seventh for the final score.

Emory returns to the diamond Saturday, April 1, when it faces LaGrange College (Ga.). The two squads will resume the game suspended from March 9, at 1:00 p.m. The regularly scheduled contest will begin at 2:00 p.m.


EMORY RANKED THIRD IN LATEST ABCA POLL

(March 26) The Emory baseball squad is currently ranked No. 3 in the country for Division III by the American Baseball Coaches Association. The Eagles, who are 21-2 on the season, have 225 points in the poll and received three first place votes.

Leading the poll is New Jersey with a 13-0 record, four first place votes and 228 points. Standing second is Wooster with a 14-3 record and 227 points and one first place vote.

While being ranked No. 3 in the nation, the Eagles are ranked No. 1 in the South Region. Of the nine teams ranked in the South Region, five are ranked in the top 25 and two are receiving votes. Emory is No. 3, while Mary Washington University (Va.) is No. 11, Salisbury University (Md.) is No. 13, LaGrange College (Ga.) is No. 19 and North Carolina Wesleyan is No. 25. Receiving votes are Ferrum University (Va.) and Millsaps College (Miss.).

The Eagles have already claimed the 2006 UAA Championship with a perfect 6-0 record. It marked the seventh UAA Championships for Emory and first since 2004. The Eagles have won four conference championships under head coach Mike Twardoski.

EMORY WINS IN EXTRA INNINGS

(March 25) Emory University (21-2) defeated Southern Polytechnic University (24-13) 3-2 in the bottom of the 10th inning.  Frank Pfister hit a single up the middle driving in Bryan Langboard for the winning run.

Senior pitcher Mike Kerfeld (4-0, 1.31 ERA) picked up the win pitching three and one-third innings allowing only three hits and striking out two.  Senior Tom Mieczkowski started the game and pitched six and two-thirds innings striking out three while allowing only one run.

Emory trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the 5th where they scored two runs.  Brandon Custer scored off of a wild pitch, after reaching base on a single.  Alex Sotiriou scored on a sacrifice fly by Bryan Langboard.  Southern Polytechnic tied the game up at two in the top of the 8th inning, and Emory finally scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.

Custer and Sotiriou both went 2-for-4, including a double by Custer, and scored a run each on the day.  Frank Pfister's only hit of the game came in the bottom of the 10th when he knocked in Bryan Langboard to win the game. 

The Eagles improve to 21-2 on the season and play Tuesday at home against DePauw University (In.) at 3 p.m.


EMORY SHUTS OUT CENTRE COLLEGE 8-0

(March 23) Emory University's Jason Glushon and Julian Smith combined for a four-hit shutout in an 8-0 rout over Centre College (Ky.).

Glushon pitched six innings of shutout ball, striking out eight batters while surrendering only four hits and walking none. The junior improves to a perfect 5-0 on the season with the win.

Smith earned his first career save with three no-hit innings to close out the game, walking none and striking out one batter.

Third baseman Frank Pfister's bases-loaded two-run double sparked a five-run Eagle rally in the fifth inning.  Pfister was 1 for 3 and led the game with three RBI.  The sophomore has 7 RBI in his last three games.

The Eagles have outscored their opponents 15-1 over their current two-game winning streak.


EMORY DEFEATS NORTH GEORGIA COLLEGE & STATE 7-1

(March 22) The Emory Eagles returned to their winning ways with a 7-1 road victory over North Georgia College & State University of NCAA Division II. The Eagles improve their record to 19-2 on the season.

Getting the win for the Eagles was Ian Ganzer, who went eight and two-thirds innings, striking out eight. Ganzer now stands 5-1 on the season.

Turning in solid efforts to lead the offensive attack were Frank Pfister and Sam Cunningham. Pfister went 3-4 with an RBI, while Cunningham was 2-4 with an RBI as well.

Mike Levin provided an offensive spark with a two-out, two-run single, while Joe Roth had a pinch hit RBI single in the top of the ninth to put the game away.

Up next for the Eagles is their third game in as many days when they welcome Centre College (Ky.) to Chappell Park. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.

EAGLES FALL TO HUNTINGDON 12-7

(March 21) The Emory baseball team dropped a hard fought 12-7 decision to Huntingdon College (Ala.) on Tuesday afternoon at Chappell Park.

The loss drops Emory's record to 18-2 on the season.

Leading the way for the Eagles were Justin Gordon and Mike Levin with two hits a piece. Gordon finished the day 2-5, scoring one run, while Levin was 2-3 with an RBI.

Taking the loss was Rich Babb, who now stands 2-1 on the season.

The Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second before Emory exploded for five runs in the fourth. Each team tacked on another run in the fifth inning with the Eagles holding a 6-2 advantage heading into the seventh inning.

Huntingdon cut the lead to two with two more runs in the seventh before scoring sixth in the eighth and two more in the ninth compared to one for the Eagles in the eighth for the final score.

Emory looks to rebound Wednesday as it travels to Dahlonega, Ga., to face North Georgia College and State University. This will mark the second of three games in three days for the Eagles. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.


EMORY CLAIMS 2006 UAA CHAMPIONSHIP

(March 18) The Emory baseball team won the 2006 UAA Championship. The Eagles finished the UAA with a record of 6-0. Saturday saw the team close out with a 4-3 victory of the University of Rochester (N.Y.) to claim the championship.

This marks the seventh UAA Championships for the Eagles and first since 2004. The Eagles have now won four conference championships under head coach Mike Twardowski.

The game against Rochester saw Emory trail 3-0 going into the bottom of the eighth. With two outs Emory got three consecutive doubles from David Hissey, Joe Roth and Bryan Langbord to tie the game at three.

The bottom of the ninth saw Emory win the game on a squeeze play by Alex Sotiriou that scored Travis Langley.

Getting the win for the blue and gold was Tony Vidal. Hissey led the Eagles at the plate going 3-5.

Up next for the Eagles is a match-up with Huntingdon College (Ala.) at Chappell Park. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.


EAGLES TAKE DOWN WASHU 10-6

(March 17) The Emory baseball squad took one more step to claiming the 2006 UAA Championship with a
a 10-6 victory over Washington University.  Emory now stands 17-1 and 5-0 in the UAA.

Getting the win for the Eagles was Keith Meizler.  Ian Ganzer came in to pick up the save
for the blue and gold.

Highlighting the Emory offense was Tim Cournoyer with a three-run home run to put the
game away.

The Eagles look to capture the UAA Championship Saturday when they face the University of
Rochester (N.Y.) at 10:00 a.m.  Emory has already played Rochester, winning 9-1 on
Wednesday.



EAGLES DOMINATE CASE 18-1

(March 16) The Emory baseball squad dominated Case Western Reserve Thursday afternoon in an 18-1 victory, raising the record to 16-1 and 4-0 in the UAA.

For the contest Emory had 15 hits, with Joe Roth leading the way with two home runs. Roth finished the day 3-4, including scoring three runs and five RBI.

David Hissey finished a perfect 3-3 from the plate, while scoring one run and recording two RBI. Kai Beasley, Bryan Langbord, Frank Pfister and Brandon Custer each recorded two RBI for the game.

Getting the win was Ryan Lumsden who pitched four of the seven innings. During those four innings he allowed one run on five hits, while striking out four.

In the two contests with Case this year Emory has outscored the Spartans 29-1.

Up next for the Eagles is a Friday afternoon match-up with Washington University. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.


EMORY WIN STREAK AT 15

(March 15) The Emory baseball squad continued its hot start to the season with a 9-1 victory over the University of Rochester (N.Y.) on Wednesday during the second day of play at the UAA Championships.

Emory now stands 15-1 on the season and 3-0 in the UAA.

Getting the win for the Eagles was Ian Ganzer. Ganzer worked six innings, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out 10. He now stands 4-1 on the season. Keith Meizler and Julian Smith came in to relieve Ganzer with Meizler striking out four in two innings and Smith striking out two in the final inning.

David Hissey turned in a solid effort to the lead the offensive attack, going 4-5 with one RBI. Griffin Baum also had a solid day with a home run and two RBI. Frank Pfister collected three RBI and two hits, while Bryan Langbord was 3-5, scoring two runs.

Emory used big innings to score its runs. The Eagles scored three in the second, four in the fifth and two in the eighth. Rochetser scored its lone run in the third.

Up next for the Eagles is a second match-up with Case Western Reserve. The blue and gold took out the Spartans to open the tournament 11-0 on Tuesday. Gametime is set for 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.


EAGLES WIN TWO DURING FIRST DAY OF UAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

(March 14) The Emory baseball squad opened the UAA Championships with two victories on Tuesday. The Eagles crushed Case Western Reserve (Ohio) 11-0 before defeating Brandeis University (Mass.) 3-1.

Emory's opening game against Case saw the Eagles jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. They added three more runs in the fourth to up the lead to 6-0. The blue and gold scored another run in the sixth and four more in the seventh before the game was called.

Leading the way for the Eagles were senior Bryan Langbord and junior Tim Cournoyer, each going 2-3. Langbord and Cournoyer each scored two runs as well as two RBI. Senior Taylor Gettinger and junior Bo Schill also added two RBI each.

Getting the win for Emory was Tom Mieczkowski, going six innings and allowing no runs and just four hits, while striking out six.

Emory's final game of the day was against tougher competition in Brandeis, as the Eagles won 3-1.

Junior pitcher Jason Glushon turned in a solid outing, going eight innings and allowing one run on four hits, while striking out 10.

Langbord continued his stellar play, going 2-4, scoring one run and collecting an RBI. Junior Griffin Baum went 2-3 at the plate, also scoring a run and collecting an RBI. Junior Mike Levin scored the other run for the Eagles, while collecting two hits. Sophomore Frank Pfister also had two hits.

Emory and Brandeis each scored a run in the first inning and the game would stay tied through the fourth when the Eagles went up 2-1. They gave themselves some breathing room in the seventh with the third run.

Emory, winners of 14 consecutive games, is set to take on the University of Rochester (N.Y.) at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.


EMORY TAKES 6-1 VICTORY OVER HEIDELBERG

(March 11) Emory University (12-1) extended its winning streak to 12 games with a 6-1 win over Heidelberg College (OH). 

Mike Kerfeld threw 6.1 innings for Emory to pick up the win, allowing one run on two hits, while striking out six batters.  Kerfeld did not allow a hit to Heidelberg until the top of the seventh inning, when Matt Decker singled with one out.  For the season, the senior is 2-0 with a 0.92 earned run average and has 28 strikeouts in 19.2 innings.

The Eagles struck first in the game, scoring when Joe Roth crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Alex Sotiriou in the third inning.  Emory improved to 10-0 in games where they score first.

Justin Gordon went three-for-five at the plate, an RBI single, two stolen bases and a run scored of his own.  Sotiriou added two hits and two RBIs.

The Eagles will try to keep their winning streak alive when they head to Sanford, FL for the University Athletic Association tournament.  Emory plays its first two games of the tournament on Tuesday, March 14th, against conference rivals Case Western Reserve (OH) and Brandeis University (MA).


EMORY-LAGRANGE BASEBALL GAME SUSPENDED AFTER SEVEN INNINGS

(March 9) The Emory-LaGrange baseball game was suspended after seven innings on Thursday with Emory holding a 6-1 lead. The game will be concluded on April 1 when the two squads face for the second of three meetings.

The game was delayed for close to an hour after a LaGrange player was injured.

The Eagles never trailed, scoring a run in the first inning only to see LaGrange tie the score in the second. From there the blue and gold scored runs in the fourth and sixth innings to build a three-run cushion. Three more runs were added in the bottom of the seventh where the score stands 6-1.

Joe Roth knocked in two RBI, while collecting one hit. Also adding hits were David Hissey, Justin Gordon, Bryan Langbord, Griffin Baum and Alex Sotiriou. Of that group Hissey, Gordon, Langbord, Baum, Roth as well as Taylor Gettinger scored runs.

Up next for Emory is a game with Heidelberg College (Ohio) on Saturday, March 11 at 1:00 p.m. at Chappell Park.


EMORY UPS WIN STREAK TO 11

(March 5) The Emory baseball team upped its win streak to 11 with a 10-5 victory over homestanding Maryville College, Sunday afternoon.

Picking up the win for the Eagles was Ian Ganzer, going six innings.

Justin Gordon and Griffin Baum both turned in solid efforst at the plate with a two-run home run each.

The Eagles return to action Thursday when they play host to South Region foe LaGrange College at Chappell Park. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.


EAGLES BEAT MARYVILLE 21-3

(March 4) Emory defeated Maryville College (Tenn.) 21-3 Saturday afternoon at the Scots' home field.

Tom Mieczkowski was the winning pitcher. David Murchison had a solo home run and Kai Beasley recorded a three run homer.

The Eagles return to the field Sunday at noon to face the Scots for the fourth time this season..


EAGLES BLANK OGLETHORPE 10-0

(March 2) Playing its second game in as many days, the Emory baseball squad blanked crosstown rival Oglethorpe University 10-0.

Pitcher Mike Kerfeld turned in a solid outing for Emory with seven innings of scoreless work to pick up the win. Rich Babb and Tony Vidal came in to help shut out the Stormy Petrels.

Frank Pfister highlighted the Emory offense with an inside the park three-run home run. Griffin Baum also collect two hits and two RBI.

Emory continues its road swing this weekend, when it travels to Maryville, Tenn., to take on the Maryville College Fighting Scots. The Eagles and Scots met to open the season, splitting two games. Game times are set for 3:00 p.m. Saturday and noon on Sunday.


EMORY WINS 8th STRAIGHT

(March 1) Emory University (8-1) defeated Adrian College (Mich.) 5-1, earning its eighth straight victory.  Pitcher Jason Glushon threw eight innings striking out three and giving up only one run.

Glushon (0.50 ERA) won his third game of the season.  He has struck out a team-leading 23 batters this season in 30.0 innings pitched, while giving up only 24 hits. 

Centerfielder David Hissey went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run.  Shortstop Mike Levin was 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Third baseman Frank Pfister and second baseman Joe Roth both hit 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Hissey, Levin, Roth all hit a double in the game. 

The Eagles scored one run in the bottom of the first and never trailed.  Adrian got on the board in the top of the eighth inning, Glushon's last inning of pitching.

Emory plays tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta.


EMORY WINS THE RAWLINGS CLASSIC

(Feb. 26) Emory University (7-1) defeated Juniata College (Pa.) 11-2 to win the Rawlings Classic in Atlanta.  The Eagles pitching staff struck out 14 batters while allowing only seven hits in the game.

Ian Ganzer (1.93 ERA) pitched five innings striking out eight, including the first three batters he faced.  Ganzer earns his second win of the season.

Shortstop Mike Levin hit 2-for-2 on the day knocking in and scoring a run.  Designated hitter Justin Gordon and Catcher Griffin Baum both went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run.  Gordon recorded his third double of the season.

Right fielder Brian Langboard led off the bottom of the third inning with a double and scored on the next play when Griffin Baum singled.  The Eagles scored five insurance runs off of six hits, two for extra bases, in the inning.

Emory goes undefeated in the Rawlings Tournament.  The Eagles outscored their opponents 25-9 over a three game period.

Emory plays Wednesday, March 1 against Adrian College (Mich.) at 2 p.m. in Atlanta.


EMORY EARNS SPOT IN RAWLINGS CLASSIC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

(Feb. 24) The Emory baseball team moved to 2-0 in the 2006 Rawlings Classic and 6-1 on the season with a gutsy 7-5 victory over Lynchburg College. The game was played at crosstown rival Oglethorpe University's field.

Getting the win for the Eagles was Tom Mieczkowski, who worked six and a third innings, striking out seven. This marks his first win of the 2006 season.

Bryan Langboard turned in a solid outing for Emory, going 2-for-5 including a solo home run in the top of the third inning. He also scored three runs, while recording on RBI.

Frank Pfister went 2-for-4 at the plate, recording two RBI to lead the team.

The Eagles scored in the first inning, only to see Lynchburg tie the game in the second. After the Langboard home run in the third, Emory upped its lead to 4-1 after its half of the sixth inning. The Hornets cut the lead to 4-3 but the blue and gold once again responded with three runs in the seventh.

With a spot in the championship game already in place, Emory faces York College (Pa.) tomorrow morning. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m. at Chappell Park.


COACH TWARDOSKI EARNS 200TH CAREER WIN

(Feb. 24) Emory University (5-1) defeated York College (Pa.) (1-1) 7-2, giving Head Coach Mike Twardoski his 200th career victory.  Coach T earns the victory in the beginning of his seventh season as Emory's head coach.  His career record is 200-81 (.712), giving him the 12th-best career winning percentage among active Division III coaches.

Pitcher Jason Glushon struck out eight allowing only one run through eight innings.  Glushon (0.41 ERA) improves to 2-0 on the season.

Emory scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back.  Center Fielder David Hissey and Catcher Griffin Baum doubled, and Designated Hitter Justin Gordon and First Baseman Taylor Gettinger tripled all in the first inning.

Gettinger went 3-for-5 knocking in and scoring a run.  Third Baseman Frank Pfister went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in two RBIs.  Shortstop Mike Levin had a RBI and a run, along with two stolen bases on the day.

The Eagles play tonight at 6:30pm against Lynchburg College (VA) in Atlanta.


EMORY IMPROVES TO 4-1

 (Feb. 19) Emory University defeated Lewis and Clark College (OR) 9-1.  Jason Glushon pitched seven innings striking out four while allowing only one run.  Glushon (1-0, 1.93 ERA) earned his first win of the season.

Junior Griffin Baum hit 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.  Pinch hitter Justin Gordon went 3-for-4 scoring three runs.  Gordon leads the team in hits (9) and total bases (11).    

The Eagles scored two runs in the first inning and never looked back.  First baseman Taylor Gettinger hit a double knocking in Griffin Baum for the go ahead run.  Gettinger went 1-for-3 on the day with one RBI.

Emory plays Wednesday at Chappell Park versus The University of the South (TN).


EMORY BEATS OGLETHORPE 5-1

(Feb. 16) The Emory Eagles allowed just 4 hits and one run to beat Oglethorpe University (Ga.) 5-1, led by three and a two-thirds perfect innings of middle relief by Rich Babb and Tom Mieczkowski and a one-hit ninth inning by Keith Meizler.

Mike Kerfeld got the start for the Eagles allowing just 3 hits and one run in four and a third innings pitched while knotching six strikeouts.

The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the second using good baserunning to plate runners. Trailing 1-0 with runners on second and third, the Eagles tied it up with Brian Langbord scoring on a wild pitch and the other runner, Travis Langley advancing to third. Ryan Lollar then singled to bring in Langley and give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

The Eagles added runs in the next three innings to give their bullpen a 5-1 lead.

Babb earned the win for the Eagles, pitching two and two-thirds perfect innings.

Langley was the leading hitter for Emory going 2 for 3 with one run and one RBI.


EMORY BLASTS WASHINGTON & LEE 15-6

(Feb. 14) The Emory baseball team blasted visiting Washington & Lee University, Tuesday afternoon by a score of 15-6. The Eagles (2-1) recorded 16 hits on the afternoon, with Ian Ganzer picking up the win from the mound.

The Eagles jumped on the Generals early, scoring five runs in the first two innings with four coming in the first and another in the second. After W&L scored two in the third Emory came back with three runs in fourth and five in the fifth to build a 13-2 lead.

Leading the way for the blue and gold with two hits a piece were Justin Gordon, Travis Langley, Mike Levin and Frank Pfister. Four Eagles scored two runs today with David Hissey, Griffin Baum, Taylor Gettinger and Travis Langley.

Ganzer pitched the first five innings for Emory, allowing two runs off four hits, while striking out two.

Emory returns to action Thursday, Feb. 16 when it plays host to crosstown rival Oglethorpe University. First pitch it set for 2:00 p.m. at Chappell Park.


EAGLES EARN FIRST VICTORY OF THE SEASON

(Feb. 12) Emory University earned its first victory of the season 9 -6 over Maryville College (Tenn.) at home.

Emory scored the game winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning when sophomore second basemen Frank Pfister knocked in pinch runner Alexander Sotiriou off of a single up the middle.  The Eagles added two insurance runs in the next inning.

Senior Ryan Lumsden recorded the win, his first career victory at Emory, allowing only one hit.  Transfer Mike Kerfeld, in his first appearance in an Emory uniform, struck out six of seven batters he faced and picked up the save.

Brian Langboard went 3-for-4 with three RBI's and a walk.  Travis Langley went 2-for-4 with an RBI on his 22nd birthday.

The Eagles split this weekend's games with The Scots.  Emory plays Tuesday against Washington and Lee at 2 p.m. at Chappell Park. 


EAGLES DROP EXTRA INNINGS HEART BREAKER TO MARYVILLE 4-3

(Feb. 11) The Emory University baseball team dropped its season opener 4-3 in 13 innings to Maryville College (Tenn.) at Chappell Park.

The Eagles trailed the Scots 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Maryville's Colby Jenkins hot David Hissey with a pitch with the bases loaded.  Taylor Gettinger scored to tie the game.
 
The teams went scoreless until the top of the 13th, when MC's Kevin McKeethan scored off a Ben Peters single.

Emory pitching struck out 14 batters over the course of the game.  Starting pitcher Jason Glushon struck out eight batters in seven innings.  Keith Meizler and Ian Ganzer had three strikeouts each in relief over six innings.  At one point, Meizler and Glushon combined to retire 19 straight Maryville batters.

Maryville's Adam Rosen was credited with the win, while Ganzer takes the loss.

Brian Langbord, playing in his first game since Feb. 20, 2005, went 2-for-6 with two doubles.  Justin Gordon also collected two hits, while scoring one run.  The other run was scored by Ryan Lollar.

The Eagles and Scots meet again Sunday at Chappell Park.  First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
