Athletes of the Week

(Apr. 28) Emory University's Jeremy Bolian led the Eagles with a .625 batting average and four runs batted in through two games last week.  The Eagles' catcher hit a bases-loaded, two-out double to tie a game against Oglethorpe University (Ga.) in the fourth inning, going two-for-four with four RBIs, and eventually allowing the Eagles to win 10-6.  In a 5-3 loss to Division II's North Georgia College and State University, Bolian went three-for-four, including a key ninth-inning hit.  The freshman is batting .267 with 16 RBIs this season, and has raised his average 64 points over his last six games.  Bolian has helped the 29th-ranked Eagles to a 25-11-1 regular season record.


(Apr. 21) Emory University pitcher Julian Smith did not allow an earned run over three games this week for the Eagles.  Smith made three appearances during the week, as the senior struck out eight batters and did not issue a walk over eight innings.  Making his first-career start on ‘Senior Day' in a 10-1 win over the University of Dallas (Texas), he pitched five shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out two on just 56 pitches, to earn the victory in the game.  Smith earned a combined shutout during a 12-0 win over Huntingdon College (Ala.), striking out three batters in his one inning of work.  He leads the Eagles with 20 appearances this season, and has recorded a 3-1 record with a 1.27 earned run average and 22 strikeouts in 28.1 innings pitched.  Smith helped the 18th-ranked Eagles to a 3-1 record during the week, and a 24-10-1 overall record this season.


(Apr. 14) Emory University outfielder David Hissey batted .571 (four-for-seven) with a team-best four runs scored during two games last week.  Hissey helped the Eagles to a 6-4 victory over the fifth-ranked Piedmont College Lions, going three-for-four in the game with two RBIs and two runs scored.  In a 5-4 loss to Oglethorpe University (Ga.), the junior hit his second home run of the season, going one-for-three with a walk, a stolen base, two runs scored and a RBI.  He is now batting .336 this season with two home runs and 38 runs scored, in addition to a team-best 19 stolen bases.  Hissey has helped the 18th-ranked Eagles to a 21-9-1 record.


(Apr. 7) Emory University's Dan Molnar led the Eagles with a .438 batting average over four games last week.  Molnar went seven-for-16 during the stretch with two doubles, two triples, a home run, seven runs scored and six runs batted in.  The right fielder started the week with a two-for-four performance during a 15-10 Emory win over Oglethorpe, picking up four RBIs in the game, including a three RBI triple to put the Eagles ahead of the Stormy Petrels.  During a 7-6 loss to Piedmont, Molnar hit his second home run of the season, going two-for-five in the game with two runs scored and an RBI.  The sophomore is batting .385 this season with two home runs and a team-best 40 runs scored.  The Eagles, ranked 14th in the Nation, finished the week 2-2, and are 20-8-1 overall this season.


(Mar. 31) Emory University closer Adam Genn shut the door on the Eagles' opponents this week, pitching four scoreless innings of relief work and earning a pair of saves.  Genn pitched in three of the Eagles' four games during the week, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out three batters over his four innings on the mound.  The sophomore earned his fourth save of the season with an inning and a third of perfect relief work in an 8-5 Emory win over DePauw University (Ind.) on Wednesday, and picked up his fifth-save of the year with a perfect inning against Methodist University (N.C.), securing a 7-6 Eagle win on Saturday.  In eight appearances out of the bullpen this season, Genn has recorded an ERA of 2.40 with a 1-0 record and five saves.  His performance helped the 14th-ranked Eagles to a 3-0-1 week, and a 18-6-1 record overall.


(Mar. 24) Emory University's Charlie Robbins pitched seven innings of five-hit baseball against Rhodes College (Tenn.), helping the Eagles to a 10-1 win over the Lynx.  Robbins allowed just one run during the game, striking out four batters and walking one.  The freshman improved to 2-1 on the season, lowering his earned run average to 4.94.  Robbins helped the Eagles improve to 15-6 this year, with a 2-1 record during the week.


(Mar. 17) Emory University third baseman Frank Pfister batted .462 (12-for-26) with a home run and 10 runs batted in during six games at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Tournament last week.  In the tournament's opening game, a 6-5 Emory win over Washington University (Mo.), Pfister went three-for-five with his fifth home run of the season, five RBIs and a run scored.  During a 15-11 Eagles' victory over the University of Rochester (N.Y.), the senior went two-for-four with two doubles, three runs scored and an RBI.  Pfister led the tournament in RBIs, and finished third amongst all players with the.462 batting average and 17 total bases.  He leads all Emory players this season with a .449 average, eight doubles, five home runs and 32 RBIs over 18 games this season.  Pfister's performance helped the fifth-ranked Eagles (13-5) finish 4-2 during the UAA Tournament, and finish tied with Brandeis University (Mass.) for the Association Title.

(Mar 17) Emory University pitcher Matt Ryckman went 2-0 with a 1.64 earned run average and 14 strikeouts over 11 innings at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Tournament.  In Emory's opening game of the tournament against Washington University (Mo.), a 6-5 Eagle win, Ryckman struck out eight batters over six innings, allowing two runs on six hits en route to earning the victory.  The freshman also started Emory's tournament-clinching 10-0 win over Case Western Reserve University (Ohio), pitching five shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out six to earn his second victory of the tournament.  He was one of just two pitchers to record two wins during the tournament, and finished second amongst all pitchers with 14 strikeouts.  Ryckman's 4-0 record and 2.25 ERA this season are both team bests, and his 22 strikeouts lead all Emory pitchers as well.  His performance helped the fifth-ranked Eagles (13-5) finish 4-2 during the UAA Tournament, and finish tied with Brandeis University (Mass.) for the Association Title.


(Mar. 10) Emory University freshman Andrew Cohn batted .538 (seven-for-13) during three Emory games last week.  Cohn scored four runs during the three games to lead the squad, while driving in two runs as well.  During a 9-4 Emory victory over Oglethorpe University (Ga.), the first baseman went two-for-five with two RBIs and a run scored.  The following day, in a 5-4 loss to Case Western Reserve University, he went three-for-four with a run scored.  Cohn improved his batting average to .318 this season with nine runs scored and five RBIs, as the fifth-ranked Eagles improved to 9-3 on the campaign.


(Mar. 3) Emory University's Frank Pfister drove in 15 runs over four games last week.  Pfister, the 2007 South Regional Tournament Most Valuable Player, batted .650 during the week (13-for-20) with two home runs, 15 runs batted in, four doubles, eight runs scored, and two stolen bases.  In a 12-11 loss to Adrian College (Mich.) on Tuesday, the senior co-captain went three-for-five with a double, a home run, five RBIs and two runs scored.  His next game out, facing Maryville College (Tenn.), Pfister went three-for-four with his second home run of the week, five more runs batted in and a run scored.  He is now batting .462 this season, and leads all Emory players in doubles (five), home runs (three) and RBIs (19).  The Eagles, ranked fifth in the nation, went 3-1 during the week to improve to 7-2 this season.


(Feb. 25) Preseason all-American second baseman Joe Roth hit .667 during three Emory University wins last week.  Roth went six-for-nine over the three-game period, with two doubles, four runs scored, and three runs batted in.  He was also perfect on the base paths, stealing three bases in three attempts.  The senior's best game of the week came on Sunday against Greensboro, when he went three-for-three with a run scored, a RBI, a double, two walks and two stolen bases.  Roth guided the Eagles, ranked fifth in the nation, to a 3-0 record last week, and a 4-1 record overall.


(Feb. 18) Emory University starting pitcher Elliott Coor picked up a victory in his collegiate debut on Sunday.  Coor pitched seven innings against Millsaps College (Miss.), holding the Majors to one run on four hits, striking out two and walking one.  The freshman was able to deal Millsaps its first loss in six games of the 2008 campaign.  The Eagles split an opening-weekend series with the Majors to move to 1-1 this season.
