2008 Baseball Season Recap

The Emory University baseball team finished 2008 with a record of 25-11-1, marking the 17th-consecutive season the Eagles have won at least 20 games.

Following the highly-successful 2007 season, during which the Eagles finished second in the nation, the Eagles were forced to rebuild in 2008 after losing a number of key seniors.  This was most evident in Emory's pitching staff, where first-year pitchers threw 211.1 of the Eagles' 328.1 innings (64%) during the season. Despite the solid record, the Eagles narrowly missed a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2005 season.

For the third consecutive year, and the sixth time in the past eight seasons, the Eagles won the annual University Athletic Association (UAA) Tournament, finishing the round-robin with a 4-2 record to tie Brandeis University (Mass.) for the top spot.  Emory senior third baseman Frank Pfister became the third-straight Eagle (and sixth Emory player overall) to win the conference's Most Valuable Player award, batting .462 with a tournament-best 10 RBIs.  Joining Pfister on the all-UAA first team were senior second baseman Joe Roth and freshman pitcher Matt Ryckman, while freshman first baseman Andrew Cohn and sophomore outfielder Dan Molnar were each named to the second team.

Pfister and Roth each earned all-South Region honors for their performances during the season.  Pfister was named to the all-region second team after batting .379 with six home runs and 51 RBIs, in addition to being named the Gold Glove third baseman for the South Region.  Roth earned his second-consecutive all-region honor, earning an honorable mention.

Pfister reach an Emory milestone during the season, becoming just the eighth person in the program's history to pick up 200 career hits.  Pfister finished his Emory career with 220 hits, the third most in school history.
