Athletes of the Week

(May 4) Emory University's Elliott Coor pitched three perfect innings during the Eagles' 6-3 win over Division II North Georgia College and State University.  On a day where the Eagles used eight pitchers by plan, Coor started and worked his way through the Saints' lineup in order, without allowing a hit or a walk to the Division II team.  The sophomore allowed just one earned run in his final 19 1/3 innings pitched of the season, giving up just 13 hits and two walks while striking out nine during the six-game stretch.  Coor finished the season with a 1-2 record and a 3.90 earned run average, helping the Eagles to a 24-18 record in 2009.

(May 4) Emory University's Jeremy Bolian picked up two doubles in as many at bats during the Eagles' 6-3 win over Division II North Georgia College and State University.  Bolian also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, and scored a run for Emory, in addition to drawing a walk during the contest.  Over his final 12 games of the season, the sophomore catcher led the team with a .429 batting average (12-for-28), six doubles, a .643 slugging percentage and a .514 on base percentage, in addition to scoring seven runs and driving in six.   Bolian finished the year with a .282 batting average, eight doubles, and 15 runs batted in, helping the Eagles to a 24-18 record in 2009.

(May 4) Emory University's Steve Bralver went three-for-four against North Georgia College and State University, helping the Eagles to a 6-3 win in his final collegiate game.  Bralver picked up three singles, scoring a run and driving in a run against the Division II opponent, including a key RBI single to start a five-run eighth inning for the Eagles.  The senior first baseman, who began the week ranked eighth in Division III in runs batted in, finishes the 2009 campaign with 61 RBIs, the second-most in school history, in addition to a team-best .375 batting average.  Bralver helped the Eagles finished the season with a 24-18 record.


(Apr. 27) Emory University's David Hissey picked up five hits in 12 at bats during four games for the Eagles last week.  He finished the week with a .417 batting average, two runs scored, three RBIs and two stolen bases.  Hissey scored the game-winning run during Emory's 4-3 win over the University of Dallas, scoring from first on a single, in addition to going one-for-two with a walk and a stolen base in the game.  In an 11-6 loss to Dallas, the senior outfielder went two-for-five with a stolen base, an RBI and a run scored.  Hissey is batting a team-high .369 this season with 43 runs scored, 30 RBIs, and is second in the nation with 36 stolen bases, helping Emory to a 23-18 record.

(Apr. 27) Emory University's Tommy Dugan recorded five hits in 13 at bats for a .385 average during four games last week.  He also scored two runs, and picked up a double, an RBI, three walks and a stolen base during the week.  Dugan went three-for-four with a run scored and a stolen base during Emory's 4-3 win over the University of Dallas.  During the Eagles 11-6 loss to Dallas the day before, the junior centerfielder went one-for-four with an RBI double and a walk.  Dugan is batting .300 with 13 RBIs this season, helping Emory to a 23-18 record.


(Apr. 20) Emory University's Elliott Coor allowed just one run in five and a third innings pitched last week.  Coor led the way for the Eagles in a 21-1 victory over Oglethorpe University, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out two during his five-inning start, earning his first win of the season.  The sophomore also retired the only batter he faced in an 8-5 Emory win over Huntingdon College, inducing a groundout with the tying run on deck with two outs in the eighth inning.  Coor recorded an earned run average of 1.69 during the week, lowering his season ERA to 5.49 and improving to 1-1 on the campaign.  The Eagles finished the week 2-2, and are 22-15 overall this season.

(Apr. 20) Emory University's Steve Bralver drove in ten runs during the Eagles four games last week.  Bralver batted .471 (eight-for-17) during the four games with two doubles, four runs scored and three walks, in addition to the 10 RBIs last week.  During a 21-1 win against Oglethorpe University, he went four-for-four with five RBIs, a double and two runs scored, followed by a three-for-four performance with four RBIs and a double in an 8-5 win over Huntingdon College.  Bralver is batting .392 this season with 15 doubles, seven home runs and 60 runs batted in.  The senior has driven in four or more runs in six games this season, and is three RBIs shy of matching the school single-season record.  Bralver's performance this season has helped the Eagles to a 22-15 record.


(Apr. 13) Emory University's Will Gumm allowed just one run on two hits for a 1.42 earned run average during two appearances out of the bullpen last week.  During an 8-7 extra innings loss to Oglethorpe University, Gumm pitched four and a third innings of hitless and scoreless baseball in relief, allowing just one walk and striking out two.  The junior allowed just one run on two hits during the Eagles' 6-0 loss to third-ranked Millsaps College, striking out four during his two innings of work.  This season, Gumm has recorded a 1.46 ERA and held opponents to a .098 batting average, helping Emory to a 20-13 record for the campaign.


(Apr. 6) Emory University pitcher Matthew Katten improved to 5-0 on the season with a 4-3 win over Piedmont College.  Katten pitched six and two-thirds innings, allowing just two runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out three.  The junior lowered his earned run average to 4.29 during the season, and the Eagles are now 7-0 in games he has started this season.  Katten helped the Eagles to a 2-2 record during the week, and to a 19-10 overall record this season.


(Mar. 23) Emory University's David Hissey picked up the game-winning hit in two of the three Eagle victories last week.  Hissey picked up six hits in 11 at bats during three games last week, including two doubles, and drove in four runs while scoring three runs of his own.  During a 3-2 win over Atlanta Christian College, the senior outfielder went one-for-three with two RBIs, including a tie-breaking double in the seventh inning that scored the eventual game-winning run.  Hissey capped off a three-for-three performance on Sunday with a two-RBI single that gave the Eagles a 7-6 lead, en route to an 8-6 win over North Central College.  He also stole four bases during the week, giving him 24 on the season and making him the first player in the program's history to reach 100-career stolen bases.  Hissey is second on the team with a .376 batting average this season, and leads the squad with 26 runs scored.  His performance helped the Eagles to a 3-0 week, and a 15-7 overall record this season.


(Mar. 16) Emory University's Dan Molnar was one of the top hitters in the conference during the Eagles' six games at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Baseball Tournament last week.  The junior finished the tournament leading all UAA players in slugging percentage (.875), on base percentage (.667) and total bases (21), while setting a new UAA-tournament record with nine walks.  He also finished second in the tournament in batting average (.542), runs (eight) and hits (13).  At one point during the tournament, Molnar reached base for 11-consecutive plate appearances, going four-for-four with a home run, a double, a walk, two runs and two RBIs during a 6-3 Emory loss to Case Western Reserve University, followed later in the day by a three-for-three performance with a triple, a double, three walks and three RBIs during the Eagles' 15-5 triumph over Washington University (Mo.).  With his performance during the tournament, the right fielder and third baseman raised his average .111 points, and is now batting .324 with 16 runs scored and nine RBIs this season.  Molnar helped the Eagles to a 3-3 record during the UAA Championships, good for a second-place finish.

(Mar. 16) Emory University's Zeb Heidt pitched five and a third shutout innings over two appearances at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Baseball Tournament.  Heidt pitched the second-most innings among pitchers that did not allow an earned run, while finishing second among all tournament pitchers with eight strikeouts, and holding opponents to a .158 batting average, the fourth-lowest in the tournament.  The junior earned a four-inning save during Emory's 8-3 win over the University of Rochester, striking out seven, while allowing just two hits and one walk.  During the Eagles' 10-7 loss to Rochester earlier in the tournament, Heidt threw one and one third innings, allowing one hit and striking out one.  He has recorded an earned run average of 1.32 with 15 strikeouts over 13.2 innings pitched this season.  Heidt has helped the Eagles to a second-place finish at the UAA Tournament, and to a 12-7 overall record this season.


(Mar. 9) Emory University's Steve Bralver batted .474 and drove in 12 runs during four games last week.  Bralver picked up nine hits in 19 at bats during the week, including three doubles and a home run.  The senior matched a school record by driving in seven runs during Emory's 12-3 win over the University of the South, going three-for-four, including a double and a three-run home run.  During Emory's 7-2 win over Case Western Reserve University, Bralver went three-for-four including a bases-loaded double that scored three runs.  He also played perfect defense at first base for Emory, converting on all 56 chances he had during the week.  This season, Bralver is leading all Emory players with a .421 batting average, three home runs, and 27 runs batted in, and has driven in four or more runs four times this season.  His performance helped the Eagles to a 3-1 week, and a 9-4 record overall.

(Mar. 9) Emory University's Connor McGuiness pitched five and two-thirds innings of scoreless baseball during the course of two outings last week.  McGuiness started Emory's 3-2 victory over Haverford College, pitching four scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and two walks, and striking out five batters.  During a 4-3 Emory loss to Huntingdon College three days earlier, the freshman southpaw threw an inning and two thirds in relief, giving up one hit and one walk, while striking out one batter.  McGuiness lowered his ERA this season to 5.54, and has now struck out ten batters through 13 innings pitched.  His performance has helped the Eagles to a 9-4 start to the 2009 campaign.


(Mar. 2) Emory University's David Hissey hit .500 (five-for-10) with an on-base percentage of .643 during three Emory games last week.  Hissey also drove in five runs and scored four of his own, while picking up a double and a stolen base.  During a 5-4 Emory win over Maryville College, the senior went two-for-three with two RBIs, two walks and a run scored.  In a seven-inning, 12-2 win over Rhodes College, Hissey went two-for-three with two more RBIs, three runs scored, a double, and his team-leading second outfield assist of the season.  This season, he is batting .457 with a team-best 12 runs scored, four doubles, and seven stolen bases.  Hissey helped the Eagles to a 2-1 record during the week, and a 6-3 overall record this season.

(Mar. 2) Emory University's Matthew Katten earned his second win in as many starts this season during a 12-2 victory over Rhodes College.  Katten allowed just two runs on eight hits and one walk, while striking out one batter in six innings pitched against the Lynx.  The junior improved to 2-0 on the season, while lowering his earned run average to 5.14.


(Feb. 23) Emory University left fielder David Hissey led the Eagles in batting average, runs scored, doubles, and stolen bases, during the Rawlings Southern Classic.  Hissey batted .471 (eight-for-17) with three doubles, six runs scored and four stolen bases over the four-game stretch.  In a 9-4 win over North Carolina Wesleyan, the senior went three-for-four with four runs scored, three stolen bases and a double.  During Emory's 17-3 win over York College (Pa.), he picked up two doubles in five at bats, scoring two more runs.  Hissey is leading the squad with a .440 batting average this season, and his six steals on the campaign place him 12 shy of the school's career record.  His performance has helped lead the squad to a 4-2 record.


(Feb. 16) Emory University first baseman Steve Bralver led the team with three runs batted in during Emory's season-opening series against Birmingham Southern College.  During a 12-5 loss on Saturday, Bralver went three-for-five with two doubles and three runs batted in.  Although he did not pick up a hit during Sunday's 7-5 Emory victory, the senior walked, stole a base, and scored a run, while making a number of strong defensive plays at first base.  Bralver is batting .375 (three-for-eight) through the first two Emory games of the season, helping the Eagles to a 1-1 start to the campaign.
