2010 Emory Baseball Season Recap

2010 Emory Baseball Season Recap

The Emory University baseball team finished its 2010 season with an overall record of 19-20, including a 3-2 mark at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship Tournament.

Despite the team’s first losing record since the 1991 season, and just the second losing mark in the program’s history, the Eagles played their best baseball against some of the nation’s best Division III teams.  Emory went 5-0 against teams that qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament, outscoring those opponents by an impressive 61-23 mark.  On February 20th, the Eagles earned an 18-7 win over SUNY Cortland, the eventual Division III runners up.  Emory also split a two-game series with Birmingham Southern College, which finished the year ranked 11th in Division III, as the Eagles defeated the Panthers on a walk-off hit in the final game of the season.

The Eagles finished a rain-shortened UAA Tournament with a 3-2 record, earning a pair of wins over Brandeis University and another over Washington University (Mo.).  Emory was led by senior starting pitcher Matthew Katten, who earned a spot on the All-UAA Tournament Team after going 2-0 with a 1.38 earned run average over two conference starts.  Senior outfielder Dan Molnar hit a tournament-best .538 with a home run and four RBIs, while tying his own tournament record with nine walks, to earn all-tournament honors as well.  Junior infielder Andrew Cohn rounded out Emory’s trio of all-tournament team players, batting .421 with a home run and four RBIs.

Cohn, along with sophomore second baseman Kevin O’Connor and junior centerfielder Gabe Shivers each earned a place on the all-UAA first team at the end of the season, while senior pitcher Brian Cournoyer, junior infielder Ryan Jones and sophomore infielder Jonathan Reilly were all named to the second team.
