Eagles End Losing Streak with 13-6 Win at Guilford

Emory University’s Patrick Riebsame and Dan Molnar both hit home runs for the Eagles, as Emory put an end to its five-game losing streak with a 13-6 win over Guilford College in Greensboro, NC on Friday afternoon.

The Eagles took a 4-0 lead in the second inning, as Emory’s first five batters of the inning all reached base.  After junior Patrick Riebsame led the inning off with a double down the leftfield line, freshman Jake Eisenberg walked and freshman J.B. Smith singled to drive in Riebsame.  Junior Gabe Shivers followed with a two-RBI double to make it a 3-0 game, and after a Ryan Jones infield single, Kevin O’Connor drove in the final run of the inning for Emory with a groundout to second.

An inning later, the Eagles would add on to their lead, as Riebsame struck with his team-leading fifth home run of the season, driving in senior Dan Molnar and giving the Eagles a 6-0 lead.

Guilford would answer back off Emory starter Adam Genn in the bottom of the third inning, scoring runs on a pair of one-out RBI singles.  With two outs in the third, Kyle Wooden would double in the third run of the frame and put runner at second and third, but Genn would get a fly out to right to end the threat.

Emory would get two more back in the top of the fourth, as Molnar struck with his fourth home run of the season, scoring O’Connor, to put the Eagles up 8-3.  The four home runs this season are a new career high for the senior.

The Eagles extended their lead to 9-3 in the sixth, after O’Connor doubled to start the inning, advancing to third on a Jonathan Reilly groundout and scoring on a RBI groundout from Andrew Cohn.  Guilford answered back with a run on a sacrifice fly off Genn in the bottom of the inning to make it a 9-4 score.

Emory secured the game with three more runs in the eighth inning and one in the ninth, including two on a pinch hit two-RBI double for Jay Page.  Despite a two-run home run in eighth inning for Guilford’s Derek Hardison, the Eagles would hold on for the victory.

Genn earned the victory for Emory to improve to 3-2 in 2010, matching a season-high by an Emory pitcher with eight innings of work.  Guilford starter Will James allowed six runs in two-plus innings to take the loss, falling to 2-3 on the season.

O'Connor finished the day three-for-five with three runs and two RBIs, and is now hitting .373 with a team-high 35 RBIs this season.  Cohn, Molnar, Riebsame, Smith and Shivers all added two hits apiece for Emory as well.

With the win, Emory broke its five-game losing streak, and improved to 14-16 on the season, while the loss dropped Guilford to 13-18 for the campaign.

Emory will continue its road trip tomorrow, traveling to Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC, for the first of two games against the Monarchs, starting at 1:00 PM.
