Emory University sophomore Jay Page picked up
career highs with four hits and four RBIs, including a two-run home
run, lifting the Eagles to a 10-7 upset win over
26th-ranked Methodist University on Sunday in
Fayetteville, NC.
After falling behind 1-0 on an unearned run for the
Monarchs in the top of the first, Page struck with his first hit of
the game, a two-run home run to left centerfield, scoring
J.B. Smith and giving Emory a 2-1 lead. The
home run was the second of the season for Page.
The Eagles would add on another run in the third, as
Jonathan Reilly’s RBI double scored Shivers
to make it a 3-1 lead. However, Methodist would strike back
with a run in the bottom of the third, and two more in the fourth
off starter Matthew Katten to retake the lead,
4-3.
Emory responded with a big inning in the fifth, keyed by
Page’s third hit of the game, a two RBI single with the bases
loaded. Later in the inning, Ryan Jones
added an RBI double, followed by a two-RBI double for Shivers, to
give Emory an 8-4 advantage.
After Methodist picked up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth
to make it an 8-6 game, the Eagles would add on some more insurance
in the top of the seventh with a Jones RBI triple, followed by an
RBI single for Shivers, the centerfielder’s fourth hit and
third run driven in during the game.
Freshman Caleb Long entered the game for Katten in
the sixth inning, pitching two and a third scoreless frames,
allowing just two hits and a walk. Senior Will
Gumm relieved Long with two on and one out in the eighth,
and despite allowing a hit, got a popup and a groundout to end the
inning unscathed. Gumm stayed in to pitch the ninth, and
despite allowing a run on three hits, picked up his first save of
the season. Katten earned the win, improving to 5-2 this
season.
Page finished the day four-for-five with the home run, four RBIs
and one run scored. Shivers was four-for-four during the
game, driving in three and scoring one while stealing a base as
well. Jones added on three hits, including a double and a
triple, and two RBIs as well. Emory totaled 16 hits,
including five extra-base hits, during the contest.
After splitting the series with Methodist, Emory improved to 15-17,
while Methodist dropped to 23-9 with the loss. The Eagles are
now 2-1 this season against ranked opponents.
The Eagles will continue their road trip on Tuesday, April
13th at 7:00 PM as Emory will face NCAA Division II
North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega, GA.
