Emory Baseball Opens Series with 9-5 Win over Hendrix

Emory University senior Ryan Jones matched a season-high with four hits, and sophomore Daniel Iturrey drove in three runs, leading the Eagles to a 9-5 victory over Hendrix College on Friday, in the first of three games between the two teams at Chappell Park.

The win was the fourth in the last five games for the Eagles, who improved to 19-10 with the victory.  The Warriors dropped to 13-12 on the season with the loss.

Emory starter Paul Schwendel pitched six and two thirds strong innings for the Eagles, not allowing a hit through his first three innings of work and holding Hendrix scoreless through six.  The junior finished the game with three runs allowed on four hits and four walks, while striking out three batters, and lowering his ERA to 4.91.

Emory took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an Andrew Cohn double, which scored Brandon Hannon.  The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth, when the Eagles added on two more runs on RBI singles from Kevin O’Connor and Iturrey.

However, Hendrix finally got to Schwendel in the seventh, scoring a total of four runs in the inning off Schwendel, Connor McGuiness, and Mike Bitanga.

The Warriors’ lead was short lived though, as the Eagles put up a six run bottom of the seventh to take the lead for good.  After a walk and an error put two men on to start the inning, Iturrey picked up the go-ahead hit, knocking his team-leading fifth triple of the season to score both runners.  Jones and Cohn added RBI singles, while Gabe Shivers picked up a two-run hit in the frame as well to cap off the Emory scoring.

Bitanga would go on to pitch a scoreless eighth inning, earning the win in the game to improve to 2-2 on the season.  Freshmen Keith Gordon and Matt McMahon combined to close the game out in the ninth.

Jones finished the game four-for-five with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored, raising his average to .308 this season.  Iturrey went two-for-five with three RBIs and a run scored, extending his hitting streak to 11 games.  Shivers and Cohn each had two-RBI games as well.

Emory and Hendrix will face each other again on Saturday at 1:00 PM at Chappell Park.
