Emory University freshman Ben Hinojosa held
Hendrix College scoreless through eight innings on just two hits,
and finished out the ninth inning to earn a complete game victory
with a 7-2 win over Hendrix College on Saturday afternoon at
Chappell Park.
The complete game was the first by an Emory pitcher since May 25,
2007, when former Eagle Jason Glushon pitched the entire outing
during a loss to the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point
during the College World Series. The last nine-inning
complete game by an Eagle was also by Glushon on March 17, 2007
against Washington University (Mo.).
Hinojosa finished the day with two runs allowed (one earned) on six
hits and one walk, while striking out four batters. He
improved to 3-2 on the season with the victory, while lowering his
ERA to 3.06 during the 2011 campaign.
The freshman carried a two-hit shutout into the ninth inning, but
after committing a throwing error to start the frame, allowed four
more hits, scoring two runs for the Warriors. However, with
the bases loaded and one out, Hinojosa induced a fly out to right
and a ground out to short to end the contest and earn the complete
game win with 116 pitches.
Emory scored all of its runs over two innings, plating four in the
first and three in the sixth. The first six Emory batters of
the game reached off Hendrix starter Jordan Suydam, including an
RBI single from Kevin O’Connor, a
bases-loaded hit by pitch drawn by Andrew Cohn,
and a bases loaded walk to Patrick Riebsame.
Designated hitter Daniel Iturrey added a sacrifice
fly in the inning to cap off the four run frame, but the sophomore
was 0-for-3 in the game, putting an end to his 11-game hitting
streak.
In the sixth, Jared Welch and Gabe
Shivers picked up back-to-back singles with one out, and
after a wild pitch moved the pair into scoring position,
Ryan Jones drove them both in with his
team-leading 15th double of the season. Cohn added
a bases loaded walk in the inning, extending the lead to 7-0 after
six.
O’Connor finished the game two-for-two with an RBI and two
walks, while Jones was two-for-three with two RBIs, and is now
six-for-eight during the first two games of the series.
Suydam took the loss on the day for the Warriors, falling 3-1 on
the season.
Emory improved to 20-10 on the season, surpassing its win total
from all of last year, when the Eagles went 19-20. It was the
fifth win in the last six games for Emory. Hendrix dropped to
13-13 on the season with the loss.
The two teams will wrap up their series at Chappell Park tomorrow
at 1:00 PM, as the Eagles will go for the sweep of the three-game
series.
