Emory Baseball Shut Out by Washington University

The Emory University baseball team suffered a 6-0 loss to Washington University (Mo.) on Thursday afternoon, effectively ending the squad's hopes for its third-consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship.

The loss dropped Emory to 2-4 in the UAA Tournament, and ended the team's two-game winning streak, after losing the first three games of conference competition.  Emory fell to 8-9 overall this season with the defeat.

Meanwhile, the Bears now stand at 8-4 overall and at 4-1 in UAA action, and are in the driver's seat for the conference championship, with five of their eight games in the books.

Washington jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game with two-out runs in each of the first and second innings against Emory freshman starter Tyler Sprague.  However, the Bears did the majority of their damage in the fifth innings, scoring three runs during the frame to take a 5-0 lead.

Freshman lefty Steven Summey would pitch the final four innings for the Eagles, allowing just one run on four hits and three walks, while striking out three.

Emory had a chance to get back into the game, when, trailing 5-0 in the seventh, the Eagles loaded the bases with two outs, but junior Daniel Iturrey popped up to end the inning.  Emory hitters left 10 men on base during the game.

Junior Wes Peacock finished the game one-for-four with a single to extend his hitting streak to a season-best 12 games.

Washington's Dom Quaranta earned the win with seven shutout innings, scattering five hits and four walks, while striking out six batters.  Max Zhang shut down the Eagles with hitless innings in the eighth and ninth to secure the victory.  Sprague took the loss for Emory, his second of the tournament, falling to 3-2 on the season.

The Eagles will look to bounce back with a win on Friday, when the squad faces off against Brandeis University at 2:00 PM at Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford, Florida.
