Emory Looks to Continue Hot Streak against Methodist

The Emory University Baseball team, winners of six of its last seven games, will look to keep its recent string of success going this weekend, when it hosts USA South Champion Methodist University at Chappell Park on Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 PM.

Emory Eagles
The Eagles claimed a pair of mid-week victories over Oglethorpe University and Maryville College to improve to 19-14 this season, including a 13-6 record over its last 19 games.  In games played at Chappell Park this season, Emory stands at 6-5.  The Eagles are now hitting .280 as a team and averaging 5.8 runs per game, while the team's pitchers have combined for a 3.52 ERA, while limiting the opposition to a .276 batting average.

Emory head coach Mike Twardoski, currently has a record of 408-193-1 during his 14-year career at Emory.  Twardoski has led the squad to eight UAA Championships, seven NCAA Tournament Appearances and three Division III World Series trips, including a second-place finish in 2007.  He began the year as the 22nd-winningest active coach in Division III and the 27th-best Division III coach all-time with a .685 winning percentage.

Methodist Monarchs
Methodist has already written its ticket to the NCAA Tournament, earning the automatic bid from the USA South after winning the conference tournament as the sixth-seed.  Since the end of the tournament, the Monarchs suffered a 7-5 home loss to Guilford, and now stand at 21-19 overall this season, including a 7-11 record in road games.  Methodist is batting .270 as a team and averaging just over five runs per game, while its pitching staff has a 4.29 ERA and a .287 opponents' batting average.

Methodist is led by long-time head coach Tom Austin, who has a 1,028-454-9 record during his 34 seasons with the team, and ranks second among active Division III coaches in victories.  He is assisted by Spencer Martin, Blake Maxwell, Justin Zeller and Rusty White.

Matchup History
The Eagles and the Monarchs have faced each other at least once every year since the 1992 season, the second year of the varsity program at Emory.  Methodist holds a slight edge in the series, with Emory holding a 19-20-1 record in the all-time ledger, including a 9-8 mark at home.

Last season, Emory and Methodist split a doubleheader in Fayetteville, NC, with the Eagles winning the early game 11-8, before losing the late contest 11-7.  Emory's solid offensive output in the two games was keyed by junior Daniel Iturrey, who went four-for-six with four runs scored and four RBIs, and junior Jared Welch, who was three-for-eight with five runs scored and three RBIs.  In addition, sophomore Wes Peacock added a four-for-five performance with three stolen bases.  On the mound, sophomores Michael Byman and Dylan Finer each had scoreless relief outings.

Emory Notes
Emory stole seven bases in its 9-2 win over Maryville College on Tuesday, marking a season-best for the team… Junior Brandon Hannon paced the Eagles with three stolen bases on as many attempts… Hannon has stolen 21 bases on as many tries this season, the most stolen bases without being caught in school history… Emory began the week ninth in Division III in stolen bases… Including the Eagles two wins earlier this week, Emory now stands at 16-1 when it scores at least six runs, and 12-0 when it scores at least eight runs… Emory is also 16-4 in games where it scores first and 9-1 when the team scores in the first inning…  The Eagles are 14-1 when they outhit their opponent.
