2013 Emory Baseball Season Recap

Led by a talented young pitching staff and a veteran offensive core, the Emory University Baseball Team surpassed the 20-win plateau for the 21st time in the 23-year history of the program during the 2013 season.

The Eagles ended the year with an overall record of 22-17, finishing the campaign strong with a 9-4 record over the team's final 13 games of the season.  Emory's pitching staff finished the season with a 3.34 earned run average, the 43rd-best mark among the 370 ranked teams competing in Division III, while the offense combined to hit .285 and average 5.6 runs per game.  The combination of the two allowed the Eagles' to outscore their opponents by 37 runs during the season.

Emory's success on the mound was based on an inexperienced but talented group, with freshman and sophomore pitchers accounting for over 86% of the team's innings pitched during the season.  The Eagles' starting rotation was anchored by sophomore Connor Dillman, who earned a spot on the ABCA/ Rawlings All-South Region and all-University Athletic Association (UAA) Second Teams after going 4-4 during the season and leading all Emory starters with a 2.20 ERA and 68 strikeouts.  Freshman Paul Merolla was named the UAA Rookie of the Year, after leading all Eagles with five victories and recording a 3.41 ERA during the year.  Another freshman starter, Tyler Sprague, made an immediate impact on the team, winning four games and recording a 4.47 ERA over his nine starts.  Rounding out the Eagles rotation during the year were sophomores Michael Byman (2.70 ERA in nine appearances and three starts) and southpaw Dylan Finer (2-0 with a 2.84 ERA over six appearances and four starts).

In the bullpen, sophomore Graham Bloomsmith emerged as the Eagles' closer, earning all-UAA Second Team honors during the year.  The right hander finished the year with six saves and a 1.30 ERA, including five saves and a 0.52 ERA over his final 14 appearances of the season.  Veteran righties Matt McMahon (3-3, 4.94 ERA) and Robert Gross (1-0, 4.34 ERA) and freshman lefty Steven Summey (1-0, 4.41 ERA) rounded out the Eagles' deep staff, making a combined 36 appearances out of the bullpen during the year.

The Eagles' offense attack was centered around an aggressive approach on the base paths, with the squad stealing 98 bases on 112 attempts during the season, good for a .875 percentage, the highest mark in the program's history.  Four Eagles recorded double-digit stolen base totals, including junior shortstop Jared Kahn, who all Eagles with 24 steals on 28 attempts.  In addition, junior right fielder Brandon Hannon set a program record for the most stolen bases in a season without being caught, swiping 22 successfully during the campaign.

At the plate, sophomore Wes Peacock emerged as one of the Eagles' top offensive weapons, earning all-UAA First Team and D3Baseball.com All-South Region Third Team recognition at the end of the year.  The centerfielder hit a team-best .358, driving in 21 runs and scoring 25, while stealing 14 bases on 15 attempts.  Hannon added an all-UAA First Team honor after batting .325 with 34 runs scored during the year, while Kahn claimed second team honors with a .328 batting average and 14 RBIs, while leading all Emory players with 40 runs scored and three triples.  Junior left fielder Daniel Iturrey earned all-conference second team recognition as well, finishing the year with a .312 batting average and team-highs with 11 doubles and 30 RBIs.  Junior catcher Jared Welch started all 39 games for Emory, and was second on the squad with 25 RBIs, while limiting opposing base runners to just 31 stolen bases during the season.

Three Emory freshmen emerged as future impact players in the Eagles' lineup during their inaugural collegiate campaigns.  First baseman Ben Vizvary finished the year with a .340 batting average and eight RBIs, including a .500 average (12-for-24) with six RBIs over his last seven games of the year.  Second baseman Dylan Eisner made 17 starts and played in 25 total games in 2013, batting .308 with 12 RBIs, while designated hitter Chris Slivka led all Emory rookies with 15 runs batted in, hitting .296 with five doubles.

The Eagles finished tied for third at the 2013 University Athletic Association Championships in Sanford, Florida, ending the tournament with a 4-4 record.  Emory was able to bounce back after three-straight losses to start the tournament, winning four of its last five games, including a 6-2 win over eventual UAA Champion and NCAA Tournament selection Case Western Reserve University to cap off conference play.  Kahn hit .407 with eight runs scored during the UAA Championships, and was Emory's lone selection to the all-UAA Tournament team.  Slivka added a seven-for-17 performance with a team-best nine RBIs.

The Eagles also performed well during the year against teams that would later qualify for the NCAA Tournament, going 3-4 against such opponents, including wins over Case, Huntingdon College and Methodist University.

Emory Head Coach Mike Twardoski reached a milestone during the 2013 campaign, earning his 400th career victory with a 6-1 win over LaGrange College on March 23rd.  After 14 seasons at the team's helm, Twardoski has a career record of 411-196-1, good for a .677 winning percentage.
