Emory Falls to Wash U. in UAA Finale; Tie with Bears for Conference Title

A late rally from the Eagles came up just short on Sunday, as second-ranked Emory University fell 5-4 to Washington University (Mo.) to wrap-up the 2015 University Athletic Association Championships in Sanford, Florida.

With the loss, Emory and Washington finished as co-champions with 6-2 records at the annual tournament.  It marked the 13th UAA Championship in the program's history for the Eagles.

The setback came despite a strong outing from senior Connor Dillman, who went the distance for his first complete game of the year.  Dillman pitched eight innings, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out five batters.  He dropped to 3-2 for the season with the loss.

Emory struck first in the game, with freshman Nick Chambers driving in a run in the top of the second to put the Eagles on top 1-0.  However, the Bears scored single runs in each of the third and fourth innings, and put three on the board in the bottom of the fifth, including a pair on a home run from Brian Cizek.

The Eagles got a run back in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from sophomore Wilson Morgan, and another in the eighth on a double from junior Ben Vizvary.  Emory would load the bases with one out in the eighth, down by just a run.  Washington pitcher Dom Quaranta would strike out the next batter for the second out, and allowed a single to junior David Coble that scored junior Dylan Eisner, but Vizvary was thrown out at the plate trying to score the game-tying run.

Quaranta would retire the Eagles in order in the ninth to pick up his first save of the year.  Kunal Patel started for the Bears, earning his second win of the UAA Championships and improving to 2-0.

Emory dropped to 12-5 on the year with the loss, while Washington raised its ledger to 7-3 with the victory.  The Eagles will be back in action this weekend, heading to Demorest, Georgia to face Piedmont College on Friday, March 20th.
