Hernandez, Merolla Lead #3 Emory Baseball to Third UAA Win

Senior right hander Paul Merolla delivered in a big way for the third-ranked Emory University Eagles on Wednesday in the fourth game of the 2016 UAA Baseball Championships, pitching a complete game shutout in a 5-0 victory over the University of Rochester. With the win, Emory improved to 3-1 in UAA action and 13-3 overall while the Yellowjackets fell to 1-3 on the season.

Merolla, making his first start of the season, threw 115 pitches in the outing to earn his second win on the year. He allowed just six hits and one walk and struck out a career-high eight batters. It is the second shutout and fifth complete game in his career.

Emory scored all five of its runs in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and one out, junior Wilson Morgan was hit by a pitch on the first pitch of his at bat to push home junior Cody Wetmore. Junior Brian Hernandez then provided the big blow in the frame with his third home run of the season, hitting a grand slam to deep left field. Scoring on the play was Morgan, freshman NJ Kim and sophomore Nick Chambers.

In the top of the seventh, junior Philip Maldari made a terrific play in the field to keep the score tied at 0-0. With one out and a runner on first, Pete Carrier had a sharp grounder that bounced off Maldari's chest. The Brooklyn, NY native recovered and was able to field the ball and fire home to nab Jake Meyerson who broke for the plate on the play. A pitch later, Carrier was caught trying to steal second to end the Rochester inning.

Emory will play New York University in the fifth game of the UAA Championships at 11:00 AM on Thursday morning. The Violets faced UAA-leader Case Western Reserve in the second game of the day on Wednesday.
