NYU Upsets #3 Emory Baseball on Day Five of UAA Championships

The third-ranked Emory University baseball program dropped their second game during the 2016 UAA Baseball Championships, falling to New York University 8-5 on Thursday afternoon. The Eagles now sit tied for second place in the UAA standings at 3-2 trailing first place Washington University (4-1) with three games to go.

Sophomore Mitch Kerner had his first career three hit day, going 3-for-3 with a run scored at the dish. Sophomore Bubby Terp drove in the first two runs of his career and junior Brian Hernandez hit his second home run in as many days to pace the Emory (13-4) offense.

Junior Luke Emmett was handed his first loss of the season, allowing two runs in 2.1 innings out of the bullpen. Senior Tyler Sprague made his third start of the year, lasting four innings. He gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits and had two strikeouts.

The Eagles opened up the ball game, scoring twice in the second inning. Terp brought home Kerner on a sac fly to begin the scoring before senior Chris Slivka came home on a wild pitch. The Violets answered in the bottom half of the inning though, scoring an unearned run on a throwing error by sophomore Nick Chambers.

NYU (4-6, 2-3 UAA) took the lead in third inning with two runs off starter Sprague but the Eagles responded in the fourth as Terp doubled off the left field wall to score junior Philip Maldari. Emory regained the lead in the fifth inning as Hernandez launched his team-leading fourth home run of the season and second of the UAA tournament over the left field fence to increase the lead to 5-3.

The Violets however scored three times in the sixth inning off relievers Mack Wilkins and Emmett to take a 6-5 lead. NYU added two more insurance runs in the eighth to provide the 8-5 final margin.

Emory continues the UAA Baseball Championships on Friday afternoon with a matchup against first place WashU. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM at Sanford Memorial Stadium.
