Eagles Strand 16 Runners on Base in 5-1 Loss to Oglethorpe

The #5/5 Emory University baseball team left a season-high 16 runners on base in Wednesday afternoon's 5-1 loss to crosstown foe Oglethorpe University at Chappell Park. The loss snaps the Eagles seven-game winning streak, dropping them to 27-8 on the season while the Stormy Petrels improve to 19-17 overall.

Emory had several chances in the latter innings to try and mount a comeback as the team put at least two runners on base in every inning from the fifth on, including bases loaded situations in both the fifth and sixth. However, the Eagles never were able to push any runners across home plate.

Oglethorpe opened the scoring in the first with an unearned run against freshman Billy Dimlow. The Stormy Petrels added another run in the second inning as Andrew Mink homered to deep left to make it 2-0.

The Eagles cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the second as junior Chris Young singled to center to bring home senior Chris Slivka. Oglethorpe, though, regained a two-run edge in the third inning as Mink picked up another RBI with a bases loaded walk.

Dimlow settled down after the third inning as he allowed just two singles and a hit batsman to reach base. The Stormy Petrels however got to Dimlow with two outs in the eighth as Austin Ferlita belted Oglethorpe's second home run of the game, a two run shot to left, to make it 5-1 and thus forcing Dimlow to exit the contest. The Sammamish, WA native was handed his first loss of his career (6-1), finishing with five runs allowed (4 ER) on seven hits in 7.2 innings. He walked three but struck out a career-high eight batters.

Emory will be back in action Friday night with a road tilt against NAIA's Georgia Gwinnett College at 6:00 PM before taking on the Stormy Petrels again next Tuesday evening on Oglethorpe's campus.
