Brereton Flirts with Perfection as Eagles Down NYU, 5-2, in Opener

Sophomore Richard Brereton took a perfect game into the sixth inning as Emory University defeated New York University, 5-2, in the series opener at MCU Park in Brooklyn, New York.

Brereton retired the first 17 batters he faced before NYU's Francis Prior struck for a double to left with two outs in the sixth to break up the the bid for perfection. Brereton finished the outing with two runs allowed on two hits and one walk in eight innings as he improved to a perfect 4-0 in UAA contests. He added eight strikeouts in the game as he moved to 5-4 overall.

NYU sparked a rally in the bottom of the ninth as junior Charlie Redovian walked the first two hitters of the inning to bring the tying run to the plate. Redovian was able to work out of the jam, however, as he retired the next three Violets he faced to record his second save of the season.

Freshman Jack Rubenstein led off the scoring in the top half of the first as he drove home Brereton with a single to right. The Eagles padded their lead with four runs in the fourth with the big hit coming from junior Jackson Grayson who collected two RBI on a single up the middle.

NYU scored both of their runs after Brereton lost his perfect game bid in the sixth with one run coming home on a fielder's choice to short and later on bases loaded hit-by-pitch.

The Eagles and Violets continue their four-game set on Saturday with a doubleheader from MCU Park beginning at 12:00 PM.
