Emory Baseball Outlasts Huntingdon, 12-10

The Emory University baseball team withheld a late-game rally to defeat Huntingdon College, 12-10, Tuesday afternoon at Chappell Park in Atlanta.

The Hawks brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but the Eagles were able to escape with the win to move to 10-5 overall. Huntingdon also now stands at 10-5 following the loss.

The heart of the Emory order did the heavy lifting in the win with senior Ellis Schwartz and junior Tyler McLoughlin driving in three runs apiece with sophomore Jack Halloran and Matthew Sicoli also coming through with two-RBI efforts.

Senior Aaron Mishoulam earned his third straight win on the mound, allowing four runs in six innings of work. He struck out four and walked two. McLoughlin picked up his third save of the year, retiring the final two batters in the ninth.

The Eagles plated seven runs across the opening two frames to start with a 7-3 lead. Emory fell behind as Huntingdon struck for two in the first but answered with three in the home half as Sicoli drove home Jacob Grossman before McLoughlin worked a bases loaded walk. The go ahead run would then score as Schwartz was able to cross home plate on a wild pitch.

The Eagles scored four more times in the second with Halloran plating Zach Wasserlauf on a single before Schwartz delivered a two-run triple.

HC's Noah Phillips accounted for the Hawks the next three runs, picking up an RBI single in the sixth before making it a two-run ballgame in the eighth with a two-run home run to left.

Emory cashed in with five insurance runs in the eighth with run-scoring hits by Halloran, Schwartz and Sicoli prior to a towering home run blast by McLoughlin to dead center made it a 12-6 score.

Huntingdon did not go quietly in the ninth, loading the bases with one out to force McLoughlin to the mound. McLoughlin forced a ground ball to the first batter he faced but a throwing error on the return throw to first allowed another runner to score. Phillips came through with a single up the middle in the next at bat before McLoughlin shut the door, striking out Daniel Patton for the final out.

Emory is set to battle local rival Piedmont University this weekend in a three-game series. Game one is currently scheduled for Friday night in Demorest.
