Emory Baseball Snaps Skid with 12-2 Win over MUW

The Emory University baseball team picked up its second win of the 2024 campaign Saturday afternoon, defeating the Mississippi University for Women Owls, 12-2 in seven innings, in Montgomery, Alabama.

Graduate student Nick Wilson drove in three of the Eagles runs on the strength of a 3-for-4 day at the plate while junior Ryan Reynolds shined on the mound in his second start as Emory moved to 2-4. MUW, which opened its season at the Firehouse Classic on Friday, drops to 1-1.

After falling in the opener of the tournament via walkoff on Friday, the Eagles vented their frustration in the early goings by plating six runs across the first two innings. Emory loaded the bases in each of the two frames, scoring four times in the first and twice in the second.

In the first inning, Wilson delivered a two-run double to center before senior Steven Hunt smacked a double of his own to left to provide the offense. In the second, the Eagles took advantage of some pitching miscues from MUW, scoring their fifth run as senior Jacob Grossman worked a bases loaded walk before freshman Jake Lawson scored on a balk.

The six runs were plenty of run support for Reynolds who earned his second win in as many starts. On Saturday, Reynolds worked into the sixth inning to improve to 2-0 as he allowed two runs (1 ER) on four hits and two walks. He struck out five.

Following Reynolds' departure, the bats awakened once more as the Eagles scored six runs over the final two innings to end the game via mercy rule.

In the sixth, four different Eagles collected RBIs with Lawson starting the scoring with a double that plated sophomore Zach Wasserlauf. Sicoli and Wilson tacked on later in the inning with run-scoring singles each.

An inning later, freshman Trevor McAndrews crossed home as Chris DiVito reached on an error. Two batters later, junior Jack Halloran drew a bases loaded walk to force in Wasserlauf with the game-ending run.

The Eagles will conclude their weekend in Alabama on Sunday night as they take on host Huntingdon College in the finale of the Firehouse Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM ET at Neal Posey Field in Montgomery.
