Matthew Sicoli's Career Day Helps Emory Win Slugfest at Covenant, 16-10

The Emory University baseball team completed the weekend sweep of Covenant College Monday afternoon, winning a 16-10 slugfest on Lookout Mountain.

Junior Matthew Sicoli had a career-day at the plate as he drove in eight of the 16 runs. Sicoli's eight RBI are the third-most in Emory history for a single-game, tying Ellis Schwartz for second all-time and is one shy of teammate Jack Halloran's program record of nine. Both of Schwartz and Halloran's feats were accomplished last season. Sicoli went 4-for-5 at the plate on Monday with one double and one home run. Halloran ran his RBI streak to nine straight games on Monday as he went 2-for-6 with one RBI.

Freshman Trevor McAndrews also had a career-day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three RBI and scored four times. Classmate Aidan Conley collected three hits as he went 3-for-3 and drove in one.

Another newcomer, JT Rattigan, impressed on Monday as he earned his third win on the mound. Rattigan tossed four innings of one-run ball in relief, working around three walks and two hits and struck out one.

After sweeping Saturday's doubleheader, the Eagles found themselves in an early hole in the series finale as Covenant led 6-2 after three innings, highlighted by a second inning grand slam from Josh McCaskill.

Despite the four-run deficit, the Eagles offense never wavered as the comeback started in the fourth leading Emory to score 11 unanswered runs. The fourth inning saw four runs cross home plate with freshman Zach Hanson and Jake Lawson picking up RBIs before Sicoli brought around McAndrews with a single to right.

Trailing 6-5, Sicoli came through with the go-ahead hit in the sixth as he cleared the bases with a double into the right center gap. Junior Blake Dincman rounded out the scoring in the sixth with a sac fly to force Sicoli in.

The Eagles scored four runs again in the seventh to break the game open, with McAndrews scoring Conley with a double prior to Sicoli launching a towering three-run blast into the trees in right three batters later to make it 13-6.

The Scots showed some fight as they scored two runs in both their half of the seventh and eighth frames but a two-run single from McAndrews in the eighth and a sac fly from Sicoli in the ninth kept Covenant from making any real threat.

The Eagles will look to keep their current three-game winning streak going as they host LaGrange College at Chappell Park on Wednesday, March 6 at 2:00 PM. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed due to weather.
