Baseball Drops Series Finale Against NYU, 3-1

Baseball Drops Series Finale Against NYU, 3-1

The Emory baseball team (16-14, 3-5 UAA) wrapped up its four-game set against the NYU Violets on Sunday afternoon. The first three games of the series were high scoring affairs, with the offenses combining to score 51 runs. Yet, Sunday featured a pitching duel between NYU's Andrew Reid and Emory's Adam Geller. The Emory pitching staff kept the Eagles within reach for the entirety of the afternoon, holding NYU to just two runs through seven innings. However, Reid was dominant and silenced the Emory bats as the Eagles fell in the series finale, 3-1.

Geller toed the slab for Emory on Sunday, pitching one of his best games of the season. The sophomore worked into the sixth inning, giving up just two runs on three hits with six punchouts to keep the game within reach for the Emory bats.

Emory got some solid work from the bullpen as well, with the relievers combining for 3.0 innings pitched while surrendering one run on three hits. Senior Matthew Culbert came in for Geller with runners on in the sixth. Culbert went two innings, giving up just one hit and no runs. Junior Bennett Speicher pitched the eighth, as the Violets tacked on one more to get some insurance and take a 3-0 lead into the final frame.

The Eagles were held to just three hits entering the top of the ninth, trailing 3-0. The Violets sent out Reid to try and get the final three outs, looking to finish off the complete-game shutout. But the Eagles finally got to him in the ninth. Junior Matthew Sicoli stayed hot this weekend, leading off the inning with a single into left center for his second hit of the day. Junior Blake Dincman then brought Sicoli around with a double into the right center gap. Sophomore Adrien Armstrong kept the rally alive with a pinch-hit single, putting the game-tying run on base. But the Violets put the Eagles' comeback bid to rest, striking out senior Walker Woolf to secure a series split.

The Eagles will return home having split the series with NYU, winning two apiece. Emory is now 3-5 in conference play with two series under their belt. They'll have a chance to climb the standings next weekend, though, as they get set to travel to St. Louis, Missouri for a series with the WashU Bears. The series with the Bears will get started on Friday afternoon before they play a doubleheader on Saturday and wrapping up on Sunday.
