Fresh off winning the program's fourth straight University Athletic Association Championships, the Emory University golf team continues its spring season this weekend (Mar. 15-17) when it competes at the prestigious Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational. The 54-hole event will be played on the 6,725-yard, par-72 Pine Lakes Course, and serving as the host institution will be Oglethorpe University.
Emory, ranked No. 1 in the latest Division III Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll, will be one of 28 teams in this year's talent-stacked field. Seven of the top 10 and a total of 13 of the top-25 ranked programs will take part. In addition to Emory, other top-10 squads include No. 2 Huntingdon, No. 3 Illinois Wesleyan, No. 4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, No. 6 Methodist, No. 7 Guilford and No. 8 Southwestern University.
Methodist enters this year's event as defending champion after finishing 11 shots ahead of Guilford. Emory ended up tied with Southwestern for fourth place.
Using match-play format, Emory defended its title, its seventh UAA crown over the past nine years, defeating Rochester, 4-1, in the semifinals and Carnegie Mellon, 3-2 in the championship match. Sophomore Eric Yiu was named Most Valuable Player while freshman Logan Ryan earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
