Men’s Golf in Second After Day 1 of Tartan Invitational; Seven Strokes off Lead

The No. 1 Emory men's golf team traveled north to Ligonier, Pennsylvania to participate in the Tartan Invitational. After a chilly first day of competition, the Eagles sit in second place and seven strokes off the leader, Methodist University. Emory had a slow start, shooting a 304 in the first round. However, the Eagles had the most second-best second round of any team, shooting a 292 to bring their two-round total to 596 (+4).

Junior Michael Burry led the Eagles on Monday, finishing the two rounds shooting a 147 (+3) to place him at fourth overall on the individual leaderboard. Burry fought through a tough start, shooting a +6 on the front nine of his first round. Yet, the junior found a rhythm and went on to shoot three under par the rest of the way after a rocky start to his tournament. Burry recorded six birdies and one eagle on the day, setting him up five strokes off the leader, Lynchburg's Eddie Coffren V.

The Eagles received a solid performance from junior Tony Li as well, who finished the day shooting a 149 (+5). Li remained very consistent over the course of the two rounds, picking up two birdies, 22 pars, and not recording a score worse than a bogey on any holes. The junior was very efficient on Par 4s, averaging a par on such holes.

Newcomer, freshman Kevin Mu, finished the day with a score of 153 (+9). Mu had a very impressive second round, notching two eagles and a birdy and finished with a 74 (+2). The freshman leads all players on the Par 5s, shooting five under par on these holes.

The Eagles are rounded out by senior Jackson Klutznick, who shot a 152 (+8) and junior Josh Qian who shot a 154 (+10). Klutznick bounced back from his first round, where he shot a 79 (+7), to shoot a 73 (+1) in the second round of the day. Qian also rebounded nicely from his first round to shoot a 74 (+2) in his second round.

The Tartan Invitational's final round will commence tomorrow morning with a shotgun start at 8:30 AM.
