Men’s Golf Storms Back to Win Tartan Invitational; Li Wins Individual Title

Despite sitting seven strokes off the lead entering the final round of the Tartan Invitational, the No. 1 Emory men's golf team stormed back to win the competition on Tuesday, shooting a 292 in the third and final round. The Eagles' final round brought their three day total to 888 (+24) to finish four strokes ahead of Methodist University to claim the competition's team title. Junior Tony Li was the catalyst for the Eagles' impressive climb up the leaderboard, shooting a 71 (-1) in the final round to climb eight spots on the final day and win the individual title.

Emory excelled on Par 4s in the tournament, shooting nine strokes less than the next closest team on such holes. The Eagles also finished the invitational shooting 16 under par on Par 5s, which was also a tournament best.

Not only did the Eagles handle the competition on Par 4s and 5s, they racked up four eagles over the three rounds, which was two more than any other team.

Li battled through adversity on Tuesday, starting the his final round with four bogeys on his first five holes. Yet, the junior was able to storm back to shoot five under par on the back nine, with an eagle and three birdies to win the individual title by one stroke.

Freshman Kevin Mu contributed to the Eagles' tournament-winning third round with a 72 (E). The newcomer was the only golfer in the entire competition to record multiple eagles during the invitational, finishing with two. On Par 5s, Mu shot six under par over the course of the tournament, tied for the best of any golfer on such holes. He finished tied for ninth overall with a final score of 225 (+9).

Junior Michael Burry finished the competition tied for sixth overall, with a final score of 223 (+7). Burry finished his third day with a 76 (+4) and recorded two birdies, both coming on Par 5s.
