SPIROS FERDERIGOS EARNS SECOND-TEAM ALL UAA HONORS

(March 2) - Emory men's basketball stand-out Spiros Ferderigos was named second-team all-conference by the University Athletic Association.

Ferderigos had a break out season, averaging 19 points per game. This past season saw him break the school record for most points in a game, when he scored 45 in a double-overtime contest with Washington University. He also lead the team in rebounding at 6 per contest, as well as assists (75) and steals (60).

Ferderigos scored double figures in 23 of the 25 games for the Eagles this season. He finished with 54 three pointers, recording at least one in all but four contests.

Receiving honorable mention all conference is senior Jeff Hall and freshman Johnny Pinto.

Hall, who battled through an injury for most of the season, turned in another solid campaign, averaging 19.3 points per game. He finished his career as the team leader in points per game and three-point field goal percentage.  His last game's performance moves him up to ninth on the all-time Eagle scoring list with 984 points, two ahead of Robert Spivey (2000-04).  Hall finishes second in three-pointers made (182) and three-point field goal percentage (41.6%), and sixth in free-throw percentage (79.7%).

Pinto came on strong after missing the first four games of the season due to an injury. He finished his first season of collegiate competition averaging 9.8 points per game. He scored his career high of 16 on three different occasions, while going 5-for-5 from three point range in a victory over 2005 national runner-up Rochester.


EAGLES DROP SEASON FINALE TO CASE

(Feb. 25) - Emory University (11-14, 4-10 UAA) lost their final game of the season 89-78 to Case Western University (12-13, 4-10 UAA).

Jeff Hall led all scorers with 18 points, adding four rebounds.  His 4 three-pointers extended his school-record streak to 50 consecutive games with a three-point field goal, spanning over two years beginning on Jan. 25, 2004.

The senior finishes a remarkable career as the team leader in points per game and three-point field goal percentage.  His last game's performance moves him up to ninth on the all-time Eagle scoring list with 984 points, two ahead of Robert Spivey (2000-04).  Hall finishes second in three-pointers made (182) and three-point field goal percentage (41.6%), and sixth in free-throw percentage (79.7%).

Alex Ford-Carther led the team in rebounds, assists, and steals.  The junior scored 12 points in the contest and matched his season-high with seven boards.

Sprios Ferderigos scored 17 points with six rebounds, two assists, and two steals.  The sophomore finishes the season as the team leader in total points, rebounds, assists, steals and free-throw percentage.  His 475 points scored this season are the second-most ever by an Emory sophomore (Tim Garrett, 477).

Two other Eagles scored in the double digits.

Adrian Sosa scored 12 points on four three-pointers.  Freshman Johnny Pinto finished with 10 points.

Case Western forward Carson Oren recorded a double-double with a game-high 21 rebounds in addition to his 17 points.  Both Richard Mullen and Funso Lafe scored 17 for Case.

The score was close throughout much of the game.  The Eagles were within one at halftime and Adrian Sosa tied it up at 53 with 11:23 left in the game on a three-pointer.

Case Western responded with an 8-0 run that put them up for good.  A Jeff Hall three-pointer brought the Eagles within five points with 2:00 remaining, but Case scored their last 10 points from free throws to seal the game.

The second half saw Case take 37 free throws to Emory's 15 after the Eagles were whistled for 22 personal fouls.  For the game, Case scored 28 points on free throws to the Eagles' 11.

However, the Eagles' ball-handling was impeccable, allowing a season-low 4 turnovers the entire game.  On the defensive side of the court, Emory created 16 Case turnovers on 11 steals.


EAGLES BIG FIRST HALF SHUTS DOWN ROCHESTER

(Feb. 17) - Emory University (11-13, 4-9 UAA) cruised to a 78-66 victory over University of Rochester (16-8, 7-6 UAA) thanks to Spiros Ferderigos' 31 points.

Ferderigos led all scorers and rebounders with 31 points and seven boards. He was 11 for 14 from the free-throw line and added three steals in Emory's strong defensive effort.

Ferderigos has scored 30 or more points twice in his last three games, including his school-record 45 points against Washington on Feb. 12, 2005.  He has averaged 31.3 points per game and 6.3 rebounds over the stretch.

Freshman Johnny Pinto was perfect from beyond the arc, making all five of his attempts from three point range for 16 points.  Pinto has scored in the double-digits in 11 of his 19 games played.

Senior co-captain Jeff Hall celebrated his final home game with 13 points on five for eight shooting from the field.  Hall hit two of three from three-point range and pulled down five rebounds. 

Gordon McKemie got the job done on the defensive end with six steals, two blocks, and four defensive rebounds.  McKemie's career-high six steals are the most any Eagle has recorded this season, and ties for the third-highest total in school history.

Rochester's Mike Goia scored a team-high 24 points on 11 for 21 shooting from the field.  He led the game with six assists and added four rebounds.

Emory defeated Rochester, the 2005 Division III national runner-up, thanks to a first half that saw the Eagles' clicking on all cylinders.  The Eagles shot 59.3% from the field and 64.3% from three-point range while forcing 12 Rochester turnovers on eight steals. 

Emory held Rochester scoreless for over eight minutes as part of a 22-2 run in the middle of the first half.  The Eagles maintained a double-digit lead throughout the rest of the game.

The Eagles play their last game of the season on the road in Cleveland, OH against Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m.


EAGLES UPSET NO. 20 CARNEGIE MELLON

(Feb. 17)  - Emory University (10-13, 3-9 UAA) celebrated its Senior Night with an 88-74 upset victory over No. 20 Carnegie Mellon (18-5, 8-4 UAA) in the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

Senior Jeff Hall led all scorers with 27 points, including four three-pointers. He added five rebounds and a dished a team-high three assists while playing nearly the entire game.

Hall has scored 20 or more points in seven of his 14 games played this season.

Seniors Steven Swearingen and Robbie Wizenberg contributed to the Emory win with solid play.  Swearingen grabbed two rebounds and dished out two assists in the contest.  Wizenberg had two boards and one assist.

Sophomore Spiros Ferderigos scored 18 points and led the game with four steals.  He made nine of his 11 free throw attempts.

Freshman Johnny Pinto scored 10 points and led the team with six rebounds.  He has scored in the double digits in 10 games this season. 

Carnegie Mellon's A.J. Straub led the Tartans with 18 points on four for nine shooting from beyond the arc.  Bary Dunn matched his 18 points on eight for 14 shooting from the field and seven rebounds.

The Tartan's Clayton Barlow-Wilcox led the team with eight rebounds and six assists before fouling out late in the second half.

Emory overcame a 45-36 deficit at the half with strong defensive play, holding Carnegie Mellon to 23.8% shooting from the field and forcing 11 turnovers in the second half.  Emory shooters came alive with 14 for 27 shooting from the field, including 50% from three-point range. 

Gordon McKemie personally led a 6-0 Eagle run to swing the momentum firmly in the Eagles' favor.  He scored six points in 50 seconds including a dunk to put Emory in the lead 64-57 with 7:42 left in the game.

Hall made two three pointers with 3:41 left to give the Eagles a 79-67 lead and put the game out of reach.

With tonight's win over the Tartans and a 93-77 victory over New York University on Feb. 5, The Eagles have now knocked off two of the top teams in the highly competitive University Athletic Association.  Carnegie Mellon entered the game first place in the UAA standings and NYU entered tonight's game in a second-place tie.

The Eagles play their last home game of the year on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. against University of Rochester.


EMORY DROPS TO WASHINGTON IN INSTANT CLASSIC 2OT MATCH

(Feb. 12) - Emory University lost 102-100 in double overtime to rival Washington University (MO) in St. Louis at the Washington U. Field House on Sunday, February 12.

Sophomore Spiros Ferderigos played a brilliant game, setting a new school record with his career-high 45 points. Ferderigos' scoring performance shattered the 17-year-old school record of 39 points in a single game previously held by Terry Gorsuch (Jan. 20, 1989).

Ferderigos grabbed nine rebounds and dished out a team-high four assists. He was 14 of 24 from the field and five for nine from three-point range. Ferderigos was also a perfect 12 for 12 from the free throw line before fouling out late in the second half.

Eric Barvin led the game with 12 rebounds and added 15 points to record his third double-double this season. Senior Jeff Hall scored 17 points including two clutch three-pointers in the overtime periods.

Alex Ford-Carther led the team with a career-high five steals while scoring 10 points and picking up seven rebounds.

Freshman Greg Lockett made every shot he attempted, going two for two from the free throw line and two for two from the field including a three-pointer to give him seven points off the bench.

Washington forward Tyler Nading led the Bears with 22 points and seven rebounds on seven for nine shooting from the field. Five Bears scored 13 points or more, including Danny O'Boyle's 19 points off the bench.

Emory outplayed Washington in three major statistical categories. The Eagles made 32 team field goals to the Bears' 25, made 11 three-pointers to Washington's six, and out-rebounded them 46-40.

However, the Eagles were plagued by foul trouble late in the game, with four players fouling out and four more with four fouls. Washington made a University Athletic Association record 46 free throws off of a record 58 attempts. Emory and Washington beat the UAA record previously set by the same two teams on Feb. 14, 1993 for most combined free throws made in a single game with 71.

Down 56-38 with 12:30 left to go in the game, Ferderigos scored 23 consecutive Emory points to give the Eagles a 21-11 run. Adrian Sosa's three-pointer with 4:56 left gave the Eagles the lead until Washington player Sean Wallis sunk two clutch free throws with 1:10 left in regulation to send it to overtime.

Washington's Tyler Nading scored the winning basket off of an Emory turnover with less than 30 seconds to play in the second overtime.

The game was the first ever live internet audio-video broadcast in Emory basketball history, hosted by Washington's WUTV.


EMORY FALLS ON THE ROAD AT CHICAGO

(Feb. 10) - The Emory men's basketball team dropped a 69-58 decision to home-standing University of Chicago, Friday night in UAA action.

Sophomore Spiros Ferderigos and senior Jeff Hall led the Eagles, scoring 19 and 16 points, respectively. Ferderigos and Hall each connected on three three-pointers. Ferderigos led the team in rebounding with six on four defensive and two offensive. He also dished out three assists and had two steals.

Freshman Johnny Pinto turned in nine points, while junior Eric Barvin added eight. Rounding out the scoring for the Eagles were juniors Adrian Sosa with five and Alex Ford-Carther with one.

The first half saw the Eagles trail by 13 to close out the period. Chicago built a 17 point lead early in the second half only to see the Eagles mount a comeback. With 4:49 left in the game, the blue and gold only trailed 58-50 after a lay-up by Ferderigos. The Eagles would get no closer as the Maroons built the lead back to 15 before winning by 11.

Brandon Woodhead lead Chicago with 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Jesse Meyer was the contest's top rebounder with eight.

EMORY-WASHINGTON BASKETBALL GAMES TO BE BROADCAST OVER THE INTERNET

The Emory-Washington basketball doubleheader set for Sunday, Feb. 12, in St. Louis will be broadcast live over the Internet. Game times are set for 2:00 p.m. EST with the men's contest and 4:00 p.m. EST for the women's game.

A link to the game will be provided on both the men's and women's pages of www.go.emory.edu.

This marks the first time in the history of Emory men's and women's basketball that games will be broadcast live over the Internet.

Penn Atlantic, LLC is a Charleston, S.C., based communications and media company focused on aggregating and delivering sports and entertainment programming to a broad range of audiences, including selected NCAA Championships and numerous athletic events from collegiate conferences around the country.

EMORY UPSETS PHYSICAL NEW YORK SQUAD

(Feb. 5) - Emory University (9-11) upset New York University (17-3), the number two team in the University Athletic Association, 93-77 thanks to sophomore Spiros Ferderigos' team-high 23 points and nine rebounds.

Ferderigos scored 23 points on eight for 10 shooting from the field and five for six from the free-throw line.  He has scored 20 or more points in five of his last seven games, and eight times total this season.  Ferderigos has led the Eagles in both scoring and rebounds in each of the last two games.

The guard got the job done on the defensive end of the court, leading the team with a season-high five steals.  Ferderigos converted two of his steals in the first half into fastbreak buckets, including one 11:42 into the half that capped off an 8-1 Eagle run.  His five steals are the most any Eagle has accumulated this season.

Senior Jeff Hall scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds.  His two three-point field goals move him into a second-place tie with Kevin Felner on the Eagle all-time list with 169 three-pointers made in his career.
 
The Eagles countered the Violets' size advantage with a quick, balanced offense in which five different Eagles scored more than 10 points.

Junior Adrian Sosa scored 12 points and dished out a team-high five assists.  Freshman Johnny Pinto scored 14 points and tied his career-high with three three-pointers.  Pinto also came away with a career-high four steals.

Alex-Ford Carther scored 12 points off of a perfect three for three shooting from beyond the arc, all in the second half.  He dished out three assists in the contest.

New York out-muscled Emory on the boards, achieving a 41-27 rebounding advantage.  Two Violets had double-doubles in the game.  Jason Boone led all scorers with 26 points on nine for 14 shooting, and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.  Michael DeCorso scored 11 points and picked up 10 boards.

The Eagles overcame the rebounding disparity with 24 points off of 19 Violet turnovers, including seven points off the fast break.  The Violets only managed to score eight points on turnovers.


EMORY DOWNED BY BRANDEIS

(Feb. 3) - Emory University fell to Brandeis University 69-41 despite the return of co-captain Jeff Hall.

Hall, who had missed the last eight games due to injury, scored 12 points in his return.  The senior's three three-point field goals placed him higher in the Emory record books.  His 167 career three-pointers moves him to third all-time past Rashawn Allen's total of 165.  He now trails Kevin Felner, who has 169.  Hall has the highest three-point field goal percentage in school history (.428).

The senior made the first shot he attempted, a three-point field goal less than six minutes into the game. 

Two freshmen also contributed after returning from injury. Greg Lockett scored five points and grabbed two rebounds while Ryan Kresse made a free-throw and added a rebound off the bench.

Spiros Ferderigos led the game with 15 points, making this his eighth consecutive game with double-digit scoring.  He also led the Eagles with six rebounds. 

Huston Conti and Florian Rexhepi led Brandeis' balanced attack with 12 points each.  Kwame Graves-Fulgham led the game with nine rebounds.

Brandeis never looked back after taking the lead on a Rexhepi jumper with 15:26 left in the first half.

The Eagles drew one of their largest crowds of the year with an official attendance count of 320.

Emory looks to play New York University at home in the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Sunday at 1 p.m.


EMORY FALLS TO BRANDEIS 77-70

The Emory men's basketball squad dropped a hard-fought 77-70 decision to UAA-rival Brandeis University Sunday afternoon in Waltham, Mass.

Emory now stands 8-10 on the season and 1-6 in UAA play. Brandeis is 10-7, 3-4 in conference.

Leading the way was junior Eric Barvin who turned in a career-high 24 points. For the afternoon, Barvin was 10-of-18 from the floor and 1-of-2 from three-point range. He also collected five rebounds, two steals and had one blocked shot.

Sophomore Spiros Ferderigos and freshman Johnny Pinto supplied scoring support as the only other two in double figures with 16 points a piece. Ferderigos and Pinto both notched two three pointers, as well as grabbing three rebounds each.

Junior Alex Ford-Carther led the team in rebounds with six, including five offensive and one defensive.

The first half saw Brandeis control a five point lead at half time, 38-33. The first 20 minutes of play saw the contest go back and forth with Brandeis controlling the largest lead at five on two seperate occasions. The Eagles largest lead of the half was at three.

The second half opened much like the first with both teams battling back-and-forth. The Eagles took the lead at 56-53 on a three-pointer by Pinto at the 10:43 mark. Emory would control the contest until 3:47 left in the game when Brandeis took the lead back for good.

Leading the way for Brandeis was Steve DeLuca with 28 points.

Emory returns to action Friday, Feb. 3 when it welcomes Brandeis to the Woodruff P.E. Center for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off.


NEW YORK DROPS EMORY 97-64

Emory University lost 97-64 to New York University on Friday, Jan. 27 in the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

Spiros Ferderigos led the Eagles with 22 points. He made seven of his eight free throw attempts and added four rebounds.

Ferderigos has led Emory in scoring in five of his last six games played. This was the sixth time the sophomore has scored 20 or more points this season, and the third time he has done so in the last four games.

Freshman Johnny Pinto scored 12 points on six of 11 shooting from the field. Gordon McKemie led the Eagles with six rebounds.

New York forward Michael DeCorso shot 11 for 13 from the field to score a game-high 30 points. Center Jason Boone led the game with eight rebounds, adding 10 points.

Though the Eagles forced 15 Violet turnovers, they were outrebounded 38-24 in what turned out to be a physical contest.


EMORY DROPS HARD-FOUGHT DECISION TO 11TH-RANKED CARNEGIE MELLON

(Jan. 22) - The Emory University men's basketball team traveled to Pittsburgh, Pa., to face the nation's 11th-ranked team in the country Carnegie Mellon and almost came away with the upset before falling 96-88 to the Tartans.

Sophomore Spiros Ferderigos led the Eagles with 21 points that included three three pointers. He also collected six assits, four rebounds and four steals.

Four other Eagles also tallied double-figures with junior Adrian Sosa scoring 17 on 6-of-10 shooting that included 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Next was junior Shawn Bailey with 15 points, while freshman Johnny Pinto finished with 13. Junior Eric Barvin rounded out the double figure scorers with 12.

Junior Alex Ford-Carther recorded a team-high seven rebounds, while Barvin collected six.

Emory fell behind early in the contest before battling back to take the lead and enter halftime with a 48-41 lead. Carnegie Mellon jumped out to an early eight point lead at 22-14 and held the lead for the majority of the first half until the blue and gold jumped in front 41-39.

The second half saw Emory take it's largest lead of the contest at 53-45 before the Tartans responded with an 8-0 to tie the game at 53-53. Carnegie Mellon would take the lead for good at 63-61 and hold of a late Eagle's challenge to get the win.

Emory now stands 8-7 on the year and 1-4 in UAA play. Carnegie Mellon improves to 14-2 and 4-1 in the conference.

The Eagles continue their road trip with contests at New York University on Jan. 27 and Brandeis University on Jan. 29. Game time for the NYU game is 8:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. for Brandeis.


FORD-CARTHER SETS CAREER-HIGH IN EMORY LOSS

(Jan. 20) - Emory University lost to Rochester University (NY) 69-46 despite Alex Ford-Carther's hot-shooting night.

Ford-Carther made seven of his 10 field goal attempts to score a career-high and game-high 19 points.  His previous best was 16 points against LaGrange College (GA) on Dec. 3, 2005.  He also led the Eagles with three assists.

Ford-Carther was a perfect two for two from beyond the three-point arc, extending his current long-range hot streak.  The junior has made seven of his last 10 three-point attempts to raise his season three-point shooting percentage to .348.

Freshman Johnny Pinto led the Eagles with eight rebounds, adding four points.

Spiros Ferderigos scored 13 points, making three of his four free throw attempts.  He has scored in the double digits four games in a row, and has scored 10 or more in 13 of his 15 games played this season.

Rochester's Jeff Juron was six of seven from the field to score 13 points.  Jon Onyiriuka led the game with 10 rebounds.

Emory looks ahead to try to pull off an upset against No. 11 Carnegie Mellon University  (ranked by d3hoops.com) on Sunday at noon in Pittsburgh, PA.


EMORY'S AGGRESSIVE DEFENSE NOT ENOUGH TO STOP CHICAGO BIG MEN

(Jan. 15) - Emory University fell 79-68 to University of Chicago (IL) despite a 21 point scoring effort from sophomore Spiros Ferderigos.

Ferderigos scored a team-high 21 points including 4 three-point field goals.  This game marked the fourth time this season Ferderigos has scored 20 or more points.

The guard has led the Eagles in three consecutive games and four out of his last five.  He has averaged 18.2 points per game in his last five games. 

Eric Barvin matched his season and career-high with 17 points, adding a team-high eight rebounds.  Barvin has led the Eagles in rebounding in each of his last four games.

Chicago forward Jason Hicks led the game with 22 points and 16 rebounds.

The Emory defense frustrated Chicago by forcing 26 turnovers.  The Eagles were relatively conservative with the ball, only allowing 12 turnovers and just three in the final half.  However, Chicago's 58.3% shooting from the field and 47 rebounds to Emory's 20 were enough to overcome the Eagles' aggressiveness.

The Eagles shrunk the deficit to five points with less than four minutes remaining in the game, but clutch free throw shooting by Chicago down the stretch helped them seal the game in the final 50 seconds.


EMORY TURNS BACK WASHINGTON 74-71

(Jan. 7) - Adrian Sosa scored 18 points off the bench for Emory University (8-5, 1-1), including two free throws with 13 seconds remaining, to lead the Eagles to a win over conference rival Washington University (MO).

Sosa made a career-best 10 of 11 free throws, and connected on two of four three pointers to reach his career-high point total.  Spiros Ferderigos contributed 18 points of his own, including four three pointers. 

Junior post player Eric Barvin proved to be a force down low, finishing with 11 points and a team-leading eight rebounds.

The Eagles did not turn the ball over in the first half, building an 18 point lead at halftime, leading by as many as 22 with 1:17 remaining.

After a late Bears run pulled the game to within one point, Sosa's free throws put the game out of reach for Washington.

Leading the way for Washington was sophomore Troy Ruths with 23 points, as he was the only Bear to reach double figures.

The Eagles will continue conference play on Sunday, when they will play the University of Chicago at 1:00 PM at the Woodruff P.E. Center.


EMORY LATE PUSH NOT ENOUGH AS EMORY FALLS 76-68 TO CASE WESTERN

(Jan. 7) - Emory University lost 76-68 to Case Western Reserve University (OH) after just missing a comeback from 20 points down in the second half.

Sophomore Spiros Ferderigos helped Emory climb back in the game with a 15 point second half.  He finished with team-highs in all three major offensive categories on his 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists.  Ferderigos led the game with a season-high 4 steals. 

The sophomore has led Emory in scoring, rebounds, and assists in the same game twice in his last three games played.  He is the first player to lead Emory in scoring, rebounds, assists, and steals in the same game since before the 2001-02 season.

Eric Barvin scored 14 points to extend his double-digit scoring streak to four games.  His seven rebounds tied Ferderigos for the team-high. 

Freshman guard Ryan Kresse led the way defensively, forcing several turnovers while the Eagles were running the full court press in the second half.  He finished with two points, two steals and an assist.  The Eagles defense forced 23 turnovers while Case Western only forced nine.

Case Western forward Carson Oren led the game with 19 points and 11 rebounds.  He made 11 of his 14 free throws.  Case Western made 80% of their 35 free throw attempts against Emory's 61.5% shooting on 26 attempts.
 
Emory University pulled within three points with 2:53 left in the game after trailing by 13 at the half and by 20 with 15:05 left to go in the game, but could not complete the comeback.


EMORY UNIVERSITY REBOUNDS FROM EARLY FOUL TROUBLE; BEATS GORDON COLLEGE

(Jan. 2) - Emory University defeated Gordon College (MA) 64-57 thanks to guard Adrian Sosa's team-high 15 points and five assists.

Sosa scored nine of his career-high 15 points on three-point field goals and added four rebounds to help lead the Eagles to a victory. The junior has scored in the double digits in seven games this year, including his current streak of five straight games with 10 or more points.  He has made a team-leading 38.3% of his three-point field goal attempts, and has made three or more in each of his last four games.
 
Eric Barvin contributed with his second career "double-double," scoring 12 points and grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.  He scored 10 or more points five times this season.

Spiros Ferderigos barely missed his own "double-double," scoring nine points with 10 rebounds.  The guard has had 10 rebounds in two consecutive games.

Emory's bench players scored 18 points in the match.  Gordon McKemie scored four points and had five rebounds.  Johnny Pinto scored eight points thanks to a perfect six for six shooting from the free-throw line.

The Eagles took the lead for good when Shawn Bailey made a three-point field goal with 11:36 to go in the first half, starting off a 19-4 Emory run.  The Eagles out-rebounded Gordon 50-37.  Their 20 offensive rebounds contributed to their 22 second-chance points, accounting for one-third of the team's scoring.


(Dec. 30) SPIROS GETS "DOUBLE-DOUBLE," EMORY WINS 93-85

Emory University won 93-85 over Webster University (MO) at the Woodruff P.E. Center thanks to Spiros Ferderigos' "double-double."

The sophomore guard led the game with 26 points and 10 rebounds for his second career "double-double."  Ferderigos made 12 of his 13 free throw attempts in addition to tying for the game-high with five assists.  He has been Emory's assist leader in six out of 10 games played this season.

Junior Adrian Sosa tied for the game lead with five assists.  He scored 13 points on three for six shooting from beyond the three-point arc.

Alex-Ford Carther led Emory to an 18-4 run in the middle of the first half that put Emory in the lead for good.  He scored eight of his 13 points during the run, adding an assist.

Forwards Eric Barvin and Johnny Pinto each scored 11 points.  Barvin grabbed six rebounds and had a team-high three steals.  Pinto has scored in the double-digits in three consecutive games.

Emory also benefited from solid defensive play, scoring 25 points off turnovers and holding Webster to a .375 field goal percentage.  The Eagles have held their last three opponents to under 40% shooting from the field.


(Dec. 8) EAGLES DROP 79-73 DECISION TO OGLETHORPE

The Emory University men's basketball team dropped a 79-73 decision to cross town rival Oglethorpe University Thursday evening at the Woodruff P.E. Center.

Junior Shawn Bailey led the way for the Eagles with 20 points as five Emory players scored in double figures. Bailey finished the game 7 of 15 from the floor, while also going 6 of 10 from the free throw line. He also contributed seven rebounds.

Joining Bailey in double figures was junior Adrian Sosa with 14, sophomore Spiros Ferderigos with 13, senior Jeff Hall with 12 and freshman Johnny Pinto with 10. Hall and Pinto also recorded double-doubles grabbing 10 rebounds a piece

The Eagles trailed 32-29 at halftime only to see Oglethorpe jump out to a nine point lead with a little over 17 minutes remaining. Emory went on a tear, over the next 10 minutes to take the games largest lead of the night at 10 before Oglethorpe's come back to take the win.

Emory now stands 5-4 on the season. Following finals and the holiday break the Eagles return to action, Dec. 30 when they play host to Webster University (Mo.). Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. at the Woodruff P.E. Center.


(Dec. 6) EAGLES CLAIM OVERTIME VICTORY AT SEWANEE

Adrian Sosa scored 11 points in overtime to help lead the Emory Eagles to a 111-105 victory over Sewanee Tuesday evening.  They have now won two straight and stand 5-3 on the season.

Emory, which went over the century mark for the second time this season was led in scoring by senior Jeff Hall with 28 and sophomore Spiros Ferderigos with 27.  Hall finished 9 of 18 from the floor that included 7 of 13 from behind the arc.  Ferderigos scored on 9 of 14 and 5 of 7 from 3-point range.  He also recorded eight rebounds and five assists.

Freshman Johnny Pinto had his best game to date, scoring 16 points, while junior Shawn Bailey had 13.  Sosa finished with 13 points as well to round out Emory players in double figures.

As a team the Eagles were 18 of 33 from three point range for 54.5 percent.

Emory took a 52-48 lead into halftime after controlling most of the contest.  The blue and gold jumped out to a 20-point lead in the first only to see Sewanee cut the lead to four.  The second half was back and forth with six lead changes in the last five minutes before ending regulation in an 89-89 tie. 

In overtime with the score tied at 97, Emory took the lead for good on a Hall three-pointer. 

Emory closes out the pre Christmas schedule, Thursday, Dec. 9, when it plays host to cross-town rival Oglethorpe University.  Game time at the Woodruff P.E. Center is set for 7:00 p.m.


(Dec. 3) EMORY COMES BACK TO DEFEAT LAGRANGE COLLEGE
Junior guard Alex Ford-Carther's career-best 16 points and seven rebounds helped lead Emory University to a comeback victory over LaGrange College (GA) 82-75.

The Eagles came back from a seven point deficit (71-64) with 4:22 left on the clock to end the game on an 18-4 run in the victory. 

Ford-Carther's 16 points and game-high seven rebounds beat his previous career-highs of 14 points and six rebounds, both set on Feb. 14, 2005 against University of the South (TN).  He made a layup with 1:50 remaining in the game to give Emory a 73-71 lead.

Junior point guard Adrian Sosa scored 11 points on nine of 10 shooting from the free throw line.  Sosa made seven free throws with less than 90 seconds in the game to secure the victory for the Eagles.  The junior led the game with a career-high seven assists.

Jeff Hall scored a game-high 23 points and recorded a career-high four steals.  The senior has led Emory in scoring in each of the last four games and has scored 20 or more points in five of seven games played this season.  He was a perfect six for six at the free throw line and played all 40 minutes of the game.

Freshman Ramsey Shawa made his Emory debut off the bench, contributing two points, a rebound and a block.  Junior guard Steven Swearingen helped to ignite Emory's offense in the first half with four points and a steal.


(Dec. 1) EMORY FALLS TO UNBEATEN MARYVILLE
Emory University was defeated 91-77 by Maryville College (TN) despite Junior Shawn Bailey's first career "double-double."

Bailey scored 13 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds to record the Eagles' second "double-double" this season. He has scored in the double digits in five consecutive games, averaging 16.6 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game in that span.

Jeff Hall scored a game-high 24 points while collecting eight rebounds.  Hall has led the Eagles in scoring in four of their six games this season. 

Sophomore Spiros Ferderigos picked up 16 points and dished out a team-high five assists.  He has led Emory in assists four times this year.  Ferderigos made five of his six attempts from the free throw line two days after breaking the school record for free throws made in a single game. (15 against U. of the South, Nov. 29, 2005)

Eric Barvin narrowly missed recording a "double-double" with 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Eagles are now 3-3 heading into Saturday's match against LaGrange College (GA).


(Nov. 29) EMORY SETS SCHOOL RECORD IN WIN
Emory University set a school scoring record in its 112-94 victory over University of the South (TN). 

The Eagles' 112 points were the most the school has ever scored in a single game.  They broke the previous mark of 111 set on Feb. 14, 1993 against Washington University (MO). 

Sophomore Spiros Ferderigos scored a career-high 27 points and dished out a career-best and team-leading eight assists.  He made a school record 15 free throws on 18 attempts.  Ferderigos beat the previous record of 14 set by Tom Bolster on Feb. 16, 1996 against Carnegie Mellon.
 
Jeff Hall led Emory with 28 points, shooting 10 for 14 from the field.  The senior has scored 25 or more points three times this season.  Hall made four of his seven attempts from beyond the three point arc, extending his own record to 40 consecutive games played with a three-point field goal.

Ferderigos and Hall's combined 55 points tied for the second most by any duo in school history.  The school record is 58 by Sommers and Gless against LaGrange on Nov. 16, 2001.  Emory's starting five combined for a season-high 94 points and 22 assists.

Starter Alex Ford Carther scored nine points and made a career-high six assists.  Starting forward Shawn Bailey scored 17 points, his fifth consecutive game scoring in the double digits.

Freshman Johnny Pinto contributed off the bench in his first career game with eight points and four rebounds.

 


(Nov. 22) EMORY IS VICTORIOUS IN HOME OPENER
Emory University won its home opener 76-71 over Washington and Lee University (VA) on the shoulders of senior Jeff Hall's 25 points.

Hall shot a nearly perfect 10 of 11 from the free throw line, including four in the final minute of the game to seal the win for Emory.  Hall made three of six attempts from beyond the three-point line to extend his current school-record streak to 39 consecutive games with a three-point field goal.  His new total of 140 career three-point field goals leaves him 25 three-pointers away from the third highest total in school history (Rashawn Allen, 165).

Sophomore Spiros Ferderigos contributed with 17 points and a game-high three assists.  He has scored in the double digits in five consecutive games dating back to Feb. 26, 2005.

Junior Shawn Bailey scored 10 points and grabbed a season-high seven rebounds. He has scored in the double digits three games in-a-row for the first time in his career.
 
Freshman Greg Lockett came off the bench to set career-highs with seven points and five rebounds.  He shot a perfect five for five from the free-throw line.

The Eagles improve its home opener record to 15-5 in team history.  Their 76 points matches the team season-high set against Maryville (TN) earlier this year.


(Nov. 21) EMORY FALLS TO OGLETHORPE IN FINAL SECONDS
Oglethorpe's Eric Dickinson hit two freethrows with 3.7 seconds left to give OU a 74-72 victory over Emory Monday night.

Emory, playing its third game in four days trailed Oglethorpe 40-26 at halftime. The Eagles came out determined in the second half, fighting their way back into the game. The Eagles took a 72-66 lead into the final minutes only to see OU score the final eight points for the victory.

Shawn Bailey led the way for the blue and gold for the second straight game by turning in 21 points. He has scored 43 points the past two contests. Against LaGrange he recorded a career high 22. For the game he was seven of 12 from the floor and seven of nine from the free throw line, while also collecting six rebounds.

Junior Adrian Sosa was next with 13 points on four of five shooting that included two of three from beyond the arc. Sophomore Spiros Ferderigos had 11 points and nine rebounds to lead the team.

Emory concludes the preseason Thanksgiving portion of its schedule Tuesday when it makes its home debut against the Generals of Washington & Lee. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Woodruff P.E. Center. Last season the Eagles defeated W&L 90-77 in Lexington, Va.


(Nov. 19) EAGLES DEFEAT LAGRANGE COLLEGE 72-59
Emory evened it's season record to 1-1 following a 72-59 road victory over LaGrange College (Ga.).

Playing for the second time in as many days, the Eagles were led by junior Shawn Bailey's 22 points on 8 of 10 shooting from the field. He was also 6 of 8 from the free throw line.

Three Eagles joined Bailey in double figure scoring. Fellow junior Eric Barvin recorded a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Eleven of his rebounds came on the defensive end. Sophomore Spiros Ferderigos and senior Jeff Hall contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively. Ferderigos also added nine boards to his stat line.

Leon Williams led the way for the Panthers with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Robby Lawrence finished with 10 points.

Emory jumped out quick on the Panthers, leading 21-6. LaGrange cut the lead to 25-20 before entering the half down 30-25 to the blue and gold. Emory outsocred LaGrange 42-34 during the second half to get the win. Emory now leads the all-time series with LaGrange 7-1.

The Eagles return to action Monday when they travel across town to face rival Oglethorpe University at 8:00 p.m. They play their fourth game in five days on Tuesday when they make their home debut against Washington & Lee. Game time against the Generals is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Woodruff P.E. Center.


(Nov. 18) EMORY DROPS SEASON OPENER TO MARYVILLE COLLEGE
The Emory men's basketball team opened the 2005-06 season by dropping a 93-76 decision to regional foe Maryville College (Tenn.).

Senior Jeff Hall opened his final campaign as an Eagle by dropping in 30 points to lead the team. Hall was 7 of 17 from the floor, including 5 of 11 from 3 point range. He also connected on 11 of 14 from the free throw line. He also added four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Sophomore Spiros Ferderigos and junior Adrian Sosa joined Hall in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Sosa, a transfer from Oxford College, was competing in his first game as an Eagle.

Senior Gordon McKemie led the Eagles in rebounding with nine. He tallied five offensive boards and four defensive.

Maryville College was led by junior Bobby Golden with turned in a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Bo Mason chipped in with 20 points including four of nine from three-point range.

Emory will look to even its record Saturday when it takes on LaGrange College (Ga.). The opening tip is set for 4:00 p.m., at LaGrange
