Emory sophomore Austin Claunch averaged 12.5
points, 3.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and in the process tied a school
record in helping the Eagles to a pair of road wins. In a
69-57 victory at NYU on Jan. 22, Claunch played all 40 minutes and
posted 14 points (second high on the squad), tied for team honors
with six boards and doled out five assists with no turnovers. He
followed that performance with an 11-point, team-high five assists
performance in helping Emory to a 77-64 triumph at No. 15 Brandeis
on Jan. 24. He sank three-of-five from the floor and
converted all five of his free throw opportunities in registering
his 12th double-figure scoring performance of the
year.
All totaled on the weekend, he shot 42.8 percent from the floor
(6-of-14) and 1.000 percent from the free throw line
(13-of-13). His five makes from the charity stripe in the
Brandeis contest enabled him to tie Kevin Felner for the school
record with 35 consecutive free throws. Claunch, who has
knocked down all 33 attempts from the foul line during the month of
January, started his streak in the second half of the Hanover game
(Dec. 19) when he went 2-for-2.
His performance helped Emory post its first back-to-back UAA road
wins since Feb. 24-26, 2003. Emory's 12-4 record is the
second-best 16-game record in school history behind only the 15-1
slate manufactured by the 1989-90 squad.
