No. 8 Emory Men's Basketball Defeats Carnegie Mellon

Junior Alex Greven scored a season-high 22 points to lead four double-figure scorers as the No. 8-ranked Emory men's basketball team earned a hard-fought victory over Carnegie Mellon University in University Athletic Association action.  The Eagles raised their overall record to 14-1 (3-1 UAA) following an 83-68 verdict over the Tartans who fell to 6-9, 1-3 in the conference.

Greven finished the contest hitting seven-of-12 from the floor, including two-of-three from beyond the arc, and sank six-of-eight free throw attempts in chalking up his third double-figure scoring game of the season and sixth career outing of 20 or more points.  He also finished with a career-high 11 rebounds which helped him record his first career double-double.  Sophomore Jake Davis and senior Austin Claunch each contributed 19 points in the victory with Davis registering his sixth double-double of the campaign after snatching a game-high 13 rebounds, his second-highest career total.  Junior Nash Oh closed out the team's double-digit producers, giving the Eagles a big lift off the bench with a career-high tying 10 points along with a team-high three steals.

Carnegie Mellon shot 42.6 percent (26-of-61) from the floor compared to Emory's effort of 38.2 percent (26-of-68).  While the Tartans held the advantage in field goal shooting, the Eagles posted a decisive 48-36 bulge in the rebounding department, 15-7 on the offensive end that helped them finish with a 14-5 advantage in second-chance points.  Emory also enjoyed a big edge in free throw shooting, knocking down a season-high 27 from the charity stripe in 35 tries while CMU sank 11-of-17.

With Greven and Claunch scoring 14 and 11 points, respectively, in the first half, Emory went into halftime with a 40-31 lead.  Holding a 20-18 lead, Emory went on a 6-0 spurt, with Claunch hitting back-to-back buckets, followed by a basket by Greven, that pushed its lead to 26-18 with 9:27 left in the stanza.  After the Tartans' John Duhring cut Emory's lead to six points, a three-point field goal by Justin Resnick followed by a basket by Oh gave the Eagles their largest lead of the stanza, 37-26, with 4:00 remaining.

Carnegie Mellon opened the second half on a 12-3 run and knotted the contest at 43-43 with 15:52 left on the clock.  After a Greven score gave Emory back the lead, CMU scored six unanswered points, the last three coming on an Andre Moore trey, to claim a 49-45 lead with 13:44 left.   The Eagles battled back and tied the affair at 53-53 with 11:00 remaining following a bucket by Davis.  Holding a slim one-point edge with 9:28 on the clock, Emory scored 12 of the game's next 18 points to extend its margin to 67-60 with 5:55 remaining. A three-point play by CMU's Rob Mohen kept it within striking distance at 73-68 with 3:52 left, but that would be as close as the visitors would get as the Eagles closed out the contest on a 10-0 run.  The Tartans missed their last eight field goal tries in that stretch while a bucket by Emory freshman Mike Florin combined with eight-of-10 free throw shooting in that stretch sealed the outcome of the contest.  The triumph extended Emory's home court winning streak to 15 games.

The Eagles return to action on Sunday (Jan. 22) when they host Case Western in a noon start.
