Emory Men's Basketball Edges NYU In UAA Road Opener

Emory Men's Basketball Edges NYU In UAA Road Opener

Junior Alex Foster and senior Jake Davis combined for 41 points and the Emory men's basketball team won for the fifth time in six starts Friday evening after emerging with a victory at New York University.  The Eagles raised their overall record to 11-4, 3-1 in the University Athletic Association, following an 86-82 verdict over the Violets who slipped to 11-4 overall, 1-3 in the league.

Foster tallied a career-high 21 points on the evening, his fourth straight double-figure scoring effort, ending the contest by converting seven-of-10 from the floor including two-of-three from three-point range.   Davis added 20 points, his 12th consecutive performance of double digits and 10th of 20 or more points in 2013-14.  Rounding out the club's double-figure scorers were senior McPherson Moore and sophomore Davis Rao with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Emory outshot the opposition for the 10th time this season, connecting on 51.8 percent (29-of-56) of its floor attempts compared to NYU's showing of 41.9 percent (31-of-74).  Emory was successful on nine three-point opportunities, three each by Moore and Rao, in 24 tries (40.9%) while the Violets sank seven-of-24.  NYU enjoyed a 48-31 bulge in the rebounding department with Foster leading Emory in that category with 12 boards.

The Eagles had the Violets facing a nine-point obstacle early in the second half before seeing the home club respond with an 11-1 charge that put NYU ahead, 51-50, with 14:17 left.   The Violets maintained a two-point lead with 9:45 on the clock, only to see Emory battle back with a 10-0 barrage that saw Foster score four points and Rao and junior Max Davis come up with three pointer, to take a 71-63 lead with 6:11 left in the game.  The Violets punched back, scoring five unanswered points to creep to within 71-68 with 4:23 on the clock.  The Eagles then posted a 9-3 spurt, holding NYU to just one field goal nearly over a four-minute stretch, to take a commanding 80-71 advantage with 43 seconds on the clock.  Davis scored the first five points in that run while Foster contributed a pair of free throws.   A three pointer by the Violets' Joe Timmes got them to within an 81-77 margin with 16 ticks on the clock but a pair of charity tosses by both Foster and Rao stretched Emory's lead to 85-79 with seven seconds to go.

With Davis and Moore registering 14 and 11 points, respectively, Emory took a 45-39 lead into halftime.   NYU held a 19-14 lead with 12:50 left in the opening half before an 8-0 run, with Moore and Rao knocking down triples in that stretch, put the Eagles ahead by a 22-19 margin.  Holding a 30-28 edge, Emory would go on an 11-4 sprint, with Davis scoring five points, to take its biggest lead of the half at 41-32 with 3:02 left.

Emory returns to action on Sunday (Jan. 26) when it plays at Brandeis University.
