2018-19 Emory Men's Basketball Recap

2018-19 Emory Men's Basketball Recap

The 2018-19 season continued a decade of success for the Emory men’s basketball program with the Eagles coming through with numerous highlights on both team and individual levels.

Emory closed out the year with an overall mark of 20-6, representing the program's 10th consecutive winning campaign.  The Eagles captured their sixth-ever University Athletic Association title (third in five campaigns) with an 11-3 slate, the 10th straight year where they placed third or higher in the league standings.

Since the 2010-11 season, Emory owns the No. 1 record among conference teams in overall (182-60) action and the second-best showing in league (91-35) tussles.

Emory got out of the blocks quickly, rattling off wins in its first four outings of the year including verdicts over the College of Staten Island and Keuka College at the Dick Leftwich Tournament hosted by Roanoke College.  Romin Williams was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player while Matt Davet earned a spot on the all-tournament team.  Emory made its home debut with a dramatic 96-93 overtime triumph over Maryville in the opener of its Thanksgiving Classic, but its attempt to notch a fifth straight win was stymied the following day by a talented Randolph-Macon team that would eventually advance to the Round of 16 of the postseason.  After a setback at Sewanee dropped the team's record to 4-2, Head Coach Jason Zimmerman saw his squad capture all five of its December affairs including a 116-77 triumph over Trinity University with team's point total establishing a school single-game record. Another highlight during the final month on the calendar came of Dec. 5 when the Eagles' 96-87 verdict over LaGrange College allowed Zimmerman to pocket his 200th career win.  Emory wrapped up the non-conference portion of the schedule with victories at home over Oswego State (91-73) and East Texas Baptist (95-66) at its Holiday Classic.

Picked as the team to beat in the UAA Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Eagles stood 1-2 after three games, all of which were played on the road, dropping verdicts at Rochester and Chicago with a win vs. Washington University sandwiched between. Emory then regrouped and rattled off seven straight wins, six of which were by 10 or more points, to up its overall record to 17-4.  During the torrid seven-game streak, the Eagles tied the school record they had set earlier in the season for most points in a game (116-100 win over Carnegie Mellon) before coming away with a 105-82 triumph against the Bears of Wash U. After a 114-107 shootout loss to Chicago ended the winning streak, the Eagles took to the road and played their way to double-digit wins vs. Case Western Reserve and Carnegie Mellon. The two successful results set the stage for a regular-season finale at home vs. Rochester with the winner claiming the UAA title and the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Emory prevailed in the showdown by a 92-82 margin with six players scoring in double figures, highlighted by Lawrence Rowley's 19 points. It represented the program's fourth league crwon during Zimmerman's 12-year tenure as head coach.

Playing in the postseason for the seventh consecutive year (eighth time ever), Emory, ranked 18th, was sent to Greensboro, North Carolina and the campus of Guilford College where it met No. 17 Wittenberg.  The Tigers ended the Eagles' by a 100-88 count, snapping Emory's six-year streak of winning at least one NCAA Tournament game.  The Eagles' seven straight appearances to the national tournament ties the UAA record for consecutive trips to the NCAA tourney.

Romin Williams followed an outstanding rookie season with a fine sophomore campaign, landing First Team All-UAA accolades and earning second-team nods on region teams as selected by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and D3hoops.com.  The 5-foot-9 Williams led the UAA in overall scoring with a 17.3 points-per-game average, producing 23 double-figure games including nine with 20 or more points. The Eagles' top scorer on eight occasions, his 450 points represented Emory’s fourth-highest total by a sophomore.  He knocked down a team-leading 77 three-point field goals, the program’s fourth-highest seasonal mark, and his average of 3.0 treys per game was second among UAA performers. Among his many accomplishments was tying the school’s single-game record of eight three-point field goals twice (vs. Keuka, Nov. 17 & East Texas Baptist, 12/30).  Other categories where Williams ranked among the league's top 10 included assists (7th, 3.4 apg), free throw percentage (7th, .791) and assist/turnover ratio (10th, 1.2).

After missing his freshman season with an injury, sophomore Matt Schner bolstered the Eagles with an all-around year that culminated with a First Team All-UAA berth. A starter in 25 of 26 contests, he tied for second on the team with an average of 28.7 minutes per outing while tossing in 13.8 points per stint, fourth on the club and 10th on the league ladder. The 6-foot-4 Schner registered 20 double-figure scoring games, notching double digits in 11 of his last 12 contests.  He shot a team-high 58.6 percent (139-of-237) from the floor with that mark fifth among UAA players and second on the program’s seasonal chart.  In addition, Schner led the UAA in three-point shooting, connecting on 45.5 percent (40-of-88) from beyond the arc, tying for eighth place on the program's seasonal chart.  In the rebounding department, he  ranked second on the team and seventh in the UAA in rebounding (7.0 rpg), totaling 15 performances with seven or more boards.

Lawrence Rowley made a mark during his second year in an Emory uniform by finishing third on the team and ninth in the UAA in overall scoring average (14.5 ppg).   He tied for the team lead with 23 double-figure scoring contests and led or shared for team honors in scoring on four occasions.  Rowley made the most of his shot opportunities, placing second on the team and sixth among UAA players with a 57.6 percent mark from the field, good for fourth place on the program's seasonal chart. He was succesful on 50 percent or better from the floor on 19 occasions (11 of 14 UAA games) and turned in seven performances of 70 percent or better. The 6-foot-5 front liner stood first on the Emory score sheet and fourth in the UAA in rebounding with an average of 7.9 boards per contest with that effort ranking 10th on the Eagles' seasonal list.  Rowley was Emory’s top rebounder in 13 contests.
