#22 Men's Basketball Tops Carnegie Mellon 90-84 to Earn UAA-Victory at Home

The No. 22 Emory men's basketball team got back into the win column on Sunday afternoon, taking down the Carnegie Mellon Tartans 90-84 at home. The Eagles found success with a well-balanced offensive attack, with all five starters going for double digit points as well as freshman AJ Harris coming off the bench and getting into the fold with 10 points of his own.

The sophomore guard duo of Ben Pearce and Jair Knight led the Eagles in scoring, recording 19 and 17 points, respectively. Freshman Ethan Fauss had a solid day on both ends, knocking down three of four three-point attempts while also picking up three steals and a block to go along with 11 points. Junior Logan Shanahan led the Eagles with seven rebounds to add onto his 12 points. Junior Cale Martens finished his day with 13 points, six rebounds, and three assists.

Emory stumbled out of the gate, falling behind the Tartans 22-15 at around the 11-minute mark. But a pair of threes from Harris on back-to-back possessions brought the Eagles back within striking distance. The Tartans went on another scoring run, though, to put the Eagles back in a 32-23 hole.

Despite the quick burst of scoring from the Tartans, the Eagles had an answer to keep the game close. Fauss and Shanahan knocked down a couple of threes down the stretch of the first half, mixed in with some timely two-point field goals and strong defense allowed the Eagles to go into the half trailing just 49-47.

The two teams traded blows to open the second half, with the game remaining level, until Albert Fallas knocked down a three with just under 15 minutes remaining to spark the Emory offense. Fallas kicked off a 9-0 run for the Eagles, as they pulled away with a 67-59 lead. But the Tartans would not go away easily, storming back to come within two points at 72-70 with just over nine minutes left.

Once again, both teams continued to knock down shots as time kept ticking off the clock. After the Tartans hit a three to pull within one at 83-82 with 1:44 remaining, the Eagles had to win the game at the charity stripe. The Eagles went 7-8 from the line down the stretch to put water on the Tartans late comeback bid, securing their second conference win.

The Eagles won the turnover battle, forcing 10 to the Tartans' six. Emory had 16 points off turnovers as well, proving to be the difference. Head coach Jason Zimmerman's fast-paced offense was in full force on Sunday, generating 24 points on the fastbreak, whereas Carnegie Mellon had just four points on the fastbreak.

With the victory, Emory improves to 11-5 on the season and 2-3 in conference play. The Eagles find themselves now tied for fourth in the conference with four other teams. Emory will have an opportunity to climb the UAA standings next weekend as they head to the Northeast to take on Brandeis on Friday and No. 13 NYU on Sunday. The game against the Judges will tip off at 7:30 PM, and they'll take on the Violets at 12:00 PM on Sunday.
