Emory University picked up its first win in University Athletic
Association (UAA) play this season, as the Eagles defeated Brandeis
University 3-0 on Sunday.
The Eagles defense recorded its second-straight shutout and fifth
overall this season, holding Brandeis to 11 shots, only three of
which were on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Trenton
Spindler recorded his fourth individual shutout of the
year, making three saves during the contest, all in the first
half.
Emory's Zach Samuels scored in the 34th
minute of play, after stealing the ball at midfield and streaking
down the far sideline. The sophomore was able to get past a
pair of defenders and put the ball into the back corner of the net
for his third goal of the season.
The Eagles would add on another goal in the waning seconds of the
first half, as Michael Scannapieco scored his
second goal of the year off a pass from Nico
Dalton. Co-captain Jake Graetz
would cap off the Emory scoring with his team-high sixth goal of
the season on a penalty kick in the 54th minute.
The kick was set up by a foul on a breakaway for Samuels.
The Eagles improved to 9-3-1 on the season with the win, including
1-2-1 in UAA play. Brandeis dropped to 4-8-1 on the year,
including 1-3-0 in UAA matches.
Emory will return to action next Friday, as the Eagles will play at
Maryville College (Tenn.) at 6:00 PM.
