The Emory University men's soccer team stunned
11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University with two goals
late in regulation, as the Eagles came from behind to force a 2-2
tie with the Tartans.
Trailing 2-0 with less than nine minutes remaining, the Eagles
mounted a rally against a team in the Tartans that had allowed just
eight goals in its 16 prior games this season. The comeback
was started by senior Jake Graetz, who scored his
team-leading tenth goal of the season at 81:10 mark, after junior
Christopher Howie deflected a Frank
Hapak pass from well outside the box.
The assist was the team-best eighth of the year for Howie, and the
first of the season for Hapak.
The Eagles would strike again less than two minutes later
with freshman Alex Scott scoring the
game-tying goal, his second goal of the season, deflecting a shot
from the wing off a Tartan defender and into the back of the net to
even the match at two.
Despite a number of chances for both teams during overtime, neither
team would score. Emory was able to get off four shots in the
extra frames, including three in the first overtime period.
Meanwhile, despite allowing two goals, sophomore goalkeeper
Trenton Spindler turned in a strong performance
with a career-high 10 saves. One of saves was a diving stop
in the second overtime to preserve the tie for the Eagles.
Emory will finish its University Athletic Association (UAA)
schedule with a 2-3-2 conference record, good for fifth-place, and
head into its final game of the season with a 11-4-2 ledger.
Carnegie Mellon dropped to 5-1-1 in UAA play, and to 14-2-1
overall.
The Eagles will conclude their 2009 regular season on Sunday, as
Emory will host the University of the South at 3:00 PM.
Tomorrow will also feature the ‘Senior Day' ceremonies prior
to the start of the game, when the Eagles will honor graduating
senior Phillip Andreae.
