Emory University junior Jake Graetz scored two
goals, including the game-winning goal 39 seconds into the
second-overtime period, leading the Eagles to a 2-1 win over Case
Western Reserve University.
Graetz put the Eagles on the board late in the first half, giving
Emory a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute of play off a corner
kick from Christopher Howie, the junior's seventh
assist of the season.
Emory would struggle in the second half, as the Spartans outshot
the Eagles 9-0 in the frame. Included in Case's shot barrage
was an unassisted goal from Vinny Bell in the 62nd
minute, knotting the match at a goal apiece. The game would
remain tied throughout the rest of regulation, sending the contest
into overtime.
After outshooting Case 2-1 in the first overtime period, it would
not be long into the second and final overtime frame before the
Eagles would end it. Just 39 seconds into the second
overtime, Graetz headed a deflected corner kick into the net,
ending the match with his first-career ‘golden goal.'
Graetz has now scored a team and career-best nine goals this season
for Emory, giving the junior a team-high 18 points. It was
the first-career multiple-goal game for Graetz, and his second
game-winning goal of the season.
Sophomore Trenton Spindler earned the win in goal,
making three saves during the contest, including two in regulation
after the game was tied by Case. Spindler lowered his season
goals-against average to 0.84 with the victory.
The Eagles improved to 11-4-1 on the year, and are now in fifth
place in the conference with a 2-3-1 UAA record. Case dropped
to 7-8-3 on the season, including 0-5-1 in conference play.
Emory will return home for its final games of the season next
weekend, starting on Saturday against Carnegie Mellon University at
11:00 AM.
