The Emory University men's soccer team extended its winning
streak to three games on Sunday morning, as the Eagles picked up a
2 to 1 win over Eastern Mennonite University at the Soccer for a
Cure Classic.
Emory freshman Kyle O'Brien struck with the first
goal of the game in the 17th minute, scoring off a cross
from Christopher Howie that went through the hands
of the Royals' goalkeeper. The goal was the first of
O'Brien's collegiate career.
Howie would provide another helper nine minutes later, making a
cross to sophomore Nico Dalton who
was able to finish off the play with a header for his first goal of
the season. The score for Dalton, his first career
goal, would be the eventual game winner.
Howie finished the day with a pair of assists, giving him five
through the first four games of the campaign. The junior has
a pair of multiple-assist games this season, and has already
surpassed his assist total from last year.
Goalkeeper Trenton Spindler came within two
minutes of his second-straight complete game shutout in goal,
before Eastern Mennonite got on the board in the 89th
minute. He made five saves during the contest, bringing his
goals against average to 0.89, and is now 3-1-0 this season.
With the win, Emory improved to 3-1-0 on the season, including a
perfect 3-0-0 record against Division III opponents. Eastern
Mennonite fell to 1-2-2 with the loss.
Emory will return to action next Saturday, as the Eagles will
reignite their rivalry with Greensboro College in Greensboro, NC at
1:00 PM.
