The Emory University men's soccer team extended its winning
streak to five games, edging Guilford College 2-1 in Greensboro,
NC.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the match, as sophomore
Zach Samuels scored his first goal of the season
off the second assist of the year for freshman Kyle
O'Brien. The goal came in just the fifth-minute of
the contest.
After the Quakers tied the match with a 62nd-minute
goal, it would take just five minutes for the Eagles to take the
lead once again, and this time, for good. Samuels would
return the favor, assisting on O'Brien's eventual game-winning goal
in the 67th-minute of play.
O'Brien's goal was his second of the season, and his first game
winner of the campaign.
Goalkeeper Trenton Spindler played the entirety of
the game in goal, turning away two of Guilford's three shots on
goal during the match. He improved to 5-1-0 with a 0.76 goals
against average this season.
The Eagles improved to 5-1-0 this season with the victory, while
Guilford dropped to 5-3-1 with the loss. The Eagles have
reeled off five-straight wins, including three-consecutive
victories on the road.
Emory will return to action on Wednesday, as the Eagles will wrap
up their five-game road trip against in-state rival Piedmont
College.
Game Notes:
Samuels became the Eagles' 10th-different goal
scorer through six games this season... O'Brien's game winning goal
was his first of the season, making him the fourth-different Eagle
to record a game-winner on the campaign... During their five-game
winning streak, the Eagles have outscored their opponents 15-3 and
outshot opposing teams 94-41... Emory's defense is yet to allow a
first-half goal this season, outscoring opposing teams 9-0 in the
frame.
