Emory University freshman Kyle O'Brien scored a
goal and an assist, and freshman Charlie Donahue's
first-collegiate goal proved to be the game winner, and as the
Eagles defeated Oglethorpe University 3-1 on Wednesday
afternoon.
With the match tied 1-1 late, O'Brien crossed a ball over the
middle toward Donahue, who was able to head it in for the
game-winning score. The goal in the 81st minute
was the first of Donahue's young career, while the assist was
O'Brien's third of the campaign.
O'Brien notched his third goal of the season in the 20th
minute off an assist from sophomore Zach Samuels
to give Emory an early 1-0 lead. However, after battling
throughout the rest of the first half and most of the second half,
the Stormy Petrels were able to even the match with a
71st-minute goal off a direct kick. Donahue's goal
10 minutes later would give the Eagles the lead for good.
Emory would add on another goal late, as Samuels assisted on his
second score of the day, this time knocked in by sophomore
Bryan Fedner. The goal, coming in the
88th-minute was the first of the season for Fedner.
Sophomore Trenton Spindler earned the win in goal,
making one save and allowing one goal during the contest. He
improved to 8-2-0 on the season with a 0.77 goals against
average.
The win was Emory's seventh in as many contests away from home this
season, as the team improved to 8-2-0 overall. Oglethorpe
dropped to 4-5-1 with the loss.
Emory will return to University Athletic Association (UAA) play on
Saturday, as the Eagles will travel to the University of Chicago
for a 12:00 PM EST matchup.
