Scannapieco & Waxman Selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Team

Scannapieco & Waxman Selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Team

Emory University seniors Michael Scannapieco and Adam Waxman were named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District First Team, based on their academic and athletic performances this season.  In addition, Waxman and junior Nao Masuda were named the UAA’s Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively.

This is the second-consecutive year that Waxman has been selected to the Academic All-District First Team, while Scannapieco claimed the honor for the first time in his career.

Waxman has been one of the leaders of an Emory backfield that has been one of the best in Division III throughout the season.  The Eagles have set program records for shutouts in a season with 13, and for consecutive shutouts with nine.  The team’s 0.23 goals-against average is on pace to set a school record, and currently ranks as the fourth-lowest mark among Division III squads.  Waxman has helped the team limit its opponents to just 10.1 shots per game and 4.9 shots on goal per game.  In the classroom, the Economics, Mathematics and Philosophy major has a cumulative grade point average of 3.92.

Scannapieco, Emory’s active leader in games played, has led all Emory reserves with three goals and four assists this season.  Playing in 15 total games and making three starts, he currently ranks third overall on the team in assists, and fifth in total points.  Over his career, the senior forward has 11 goals and six assists for 28 points.  The business finance and accounting major has a GPA of 3.55 during his Emory career.

Voting for the Academic All-District team is conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Emory nominees represent the "college division" in District 3 which is composed of NCAA Division II and III, and NAIA schools in the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

By virtue of earning a spot on the Academic All-District first team, Scannapieco and Waxman will be placed on the ballot for the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team, scheduled to be released on Tuesday, November 16th.

The honors continued to roll in for the Eagles during the week, as Masuda earned the Offensive Player of the Week honors for the University Athletic Association (UAA), while Waxman earned the Defensive honor.

Masuda matched a UAA record with three goals during the Eagles’4-0 win over the seventh-ranked University of Rochester on Friday night.  All three of Masuda’s goals game in the second half of the contest, including his game-winning goal in the 58th minute.  The hat trick was the 24th in the history of UAA competition, and the first in a UAA men’s soccer game since November 6, 2004.  The forward has scored eight goals this season and assisted on four others for 20 points, the second-best total by an Eagle in 2010.

Meanwhile, Waxman played the entirety of the two shutout victories last weekend.  He helped hold the Yellowjackets to just three shots on goal, only one of which was in the second half.  On Sunday afternoon, Waxman and the Emory defense matched a program record with its 13th shutout of the season during a 2-0 win over Case Western Reserve.

Scannapieco, Waxman and Masuda, along with the rest of the Eagles, will return to action on Sunday at 1:30 PM for the team’s final game of the regular season.  Heading into the weekend just one point out of first place in the UAA, 14th-ranked Emory will face conference opponent Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, needing a win combined with a New York University loss or tie, to accomplish the most-likely scenario to win the UAA Championship.
