Howie, Natalino, Spindler & Samuels Named to Men’s Soccer All-Region Teams

Emory University senior midfielder Christopher Howie, sophomore defender Andrew Natalino, and junior goalkeeper Trenton Spindler each earned a spot on the 2010 NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-South Atlantic Region first team, while junior forward Zach Samuels was placed on the third team.

The three first team members were the most in a season by an Emory team since the 1998 campaign, when the Eagles also placed three players on the first team, and the most by any South-Atlantic Region school this season.  It was the seventh time in school history that the Eagles have had three or more player named to the all-South Region first team.  The four total all-region honorees are the most since the 2007 season for Emory.

Howie, one of the co-captains of the team this season and an all-University Athletic Association (UAA) first team honoree, finished the season with five assists, the second-best total on the team.  Two of his assists came in conference play, including the helper on the game-winning goal during the Eagles' victory over the University of Rochester. Howie also earned all-tournament honors at the Shellenberger Classic earlier in the year. He played in all 19 games for Emory, making 18 starts.

Natalino was the Eagles' leading scorer with 11 goals and four assists for 26 points, along with a team-best five game-winning goals.  He finished UAA play with two goals and one assist, including the game-winning goal against Case Western Reserve University, and the game-tying goal against Brandeis University.  Natalino also contributed to an Emory defense that ranked fourth in Division III with a 0.41 goals-against average.  Earlier in the year, he was place on the all-UAA first team, in addition to being named the Most Valuable Player of the Sonny Carter Invitational and to the Shellenberger Classic all-tournament team.

Spindler finished the season with a record of 13-3-2, while setting school single-season records with a 0.40 goals against average (eighth in Division III) and a 0.92 save percentage (second in Division III).  The junior's eight shutouts during the year were the most by an Emory goalkeeper over the last 24 years, and second overall in school history.  Spindler was named to the all-UAA second team, the MVP of the Shellenberger classic, to the Sonny Carter Invitational all-tournament team earlier in the year.

Samuels finished the season with a team-best eight assists, including five on game winning goals, and his 0.53 assists per game ranked him 25th among all Division III players.  He ended the year tied for second on the team with 20 points, adding on six goals, including two game winners.  One of his game-winning goals came in conference play, as the sophomore scored the difference-maker in Emory's 1-0 win over the University of Chicago.  Samuels was named an honorable mention to the all-UAA team, in addition to earning spots on the Sonny Carter Invitational and Shellenberger Classic all-tournament teams.

The Eagles ended their 2010 campaign ranked 18th among NCAA Division III teams, finishing the year with an overall record of 14-3-2.
