Emory’s Waxman Named to the Academic All-America First Team

Emory’s Waxman Named to the Academic All-America First Team

Senior defender Adam Waxman became just the third player in the history of the Emory University men's soccer program to be named to the Academic All-America First Team Presented by ESPN, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Waxman recently completed a strong season for the Eagles, helping the squad record program records with a 0.41 goals against average and 13 shutouts, including nine consecutive at one point during the season, and earning an honorable mention to the all-UAA team.  The Eagles finished their season ranked fifth among Division III teams in goals against average, and shutout percentage.  Waxman, who started all 18 games he played in during the season, also scored one goal and assisted on another during the Eagles' NCAA Tournament game against Lynchburg College.  His performance helped the 12th-ranked Eagles to a 14-3-2 overall record.

In addition, Waxman has excelled in the classroom during his Emory career, as an Economics, Mathematics and Philosophy major.  He has recorded a cumulative grade point average of 3.92 during his time at Emory, earning academic recognition from the UAA all three of his eligible seasons.

Waxman is the first Academic all-America honoree for the Emory men's soccer team since Jonathan Laycock was named to the second team and Jordan Edelman to the third, in 2008.  He is the ninth honoree overall for the program.

Waxman joins former Emory defender Kevin McCarthy (2004) and midfielder John Symbas (1999) as the only members of the Emory men's soccer program to be named to the Academic all-America first team.  He was also the 48th first team honoree in the history of the Emory athletics department.

Waxman was the only University Athletic Association (UAA) player to be selected to any of the three Academic all-America teams.

To be eligible for the Academic all-America honor, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.

Emory athletes are selected as part of the 'College Division' which represents NCAA Division II and III athletes, in addition to NAIA participants.
